A lot of that stems from defense. dWAR has Cruz at -0.8 while Harper's 0.7.

Obviously Harper will regress, but let's not act like Nelson Cruz won't come back down to earth. He's a career .272 hitter with a .354 BA. His BABIP is currently .386, his career average is .303.

I know... I was in a salty mood with that post :noidea:

People love to hate on this kid. I don't get it.
Personally, I love the way he plays the game. He is also younger than Kris Bryant. I think he is in the top 10 all time for OPS+ for players under 23. His brash confidence apparently rubs some people the wrong way, but I kinda like it.

Its because he is the biggest douche fuckface on the planet. I would rather see Justin Bieber sing the North Korean national anthem before every American sporting event than see Bryce Harper succeed.

Of course it looks like Harper will succeed so... FML

Gotcha. I hope Cruz keeps it up, especially as an "FU" to the O's.

Cruz is due to go ice cold for about three weeks here pretty soon. If he doesn't, they need to piss test him. I watched him long enough to know that while he's capable of these insane runs, he's not capable of sustaining them for an entire season.

He had an incredible start last year too, before tailing off in June-August. He had a very low BABIP June-August, and then an unsustainable one in September. He also had started off with a ridiculous HR/FB rate (like this year).

I don't have a horse in this race, but I really don't get all the hatred directed at Harper.

The kid is ridiculously talented, yes, but this isn't a guy who just got lucky with natural gifts and skated through. This is a guy who worked his butt off all the way through his teenage years (at the very least) to get as good as he is, and from everything I read, he keeps working that hard. Here's a 5 year old article about him in high school, written prior to him getting drafted.

He's doing ridiculously well so far this season. He is on pace to surpass 55 HRs, 130 runs and 130 RBIs this year with a .325/.469/.724 slash (1.193 OPS). The last person I can think of who was close to this good at this age was Ken Griffey Jr.

Agreed man, I'm biased as a Nats fan but it's a little overboard. He's a tough kid, competes hard, and plays well. There isn't much not to like.

Personally, I'd take him over Trout any day of the week. They will both have good careers, but I'd bet Harper's will be better once the dust settles.

I do think he was somewhat baited. Was he an asshole about sticking his toe in and pointing his bat? Sure. Should he have tossed? I don't think so. From what I've read these two have had a history.

That umpire decided that the fans came to the game to watch him be Mr. Authority...that said, Harper shouldn't have risen to the bait.

I don't really care about him as a person, but watching this kind of talent develop is wicked exciting. He's cooling off now, I'd still be jazzed to see him hit .300 with 40 HRs this season and wonder what he could do next. It would suck to see him lose another half a season or so to injury.

I just can't see boosting up the known roid user who can't play defense (ask a Cards fan) over a kid who seems to be able to do it all. Hasn't Cruz proven himself to be the bigger asshole at this point?
