Reminds me of the contract for Willis where the highest year is somewhere in the middle.

Looking at their two lists and something doesn't add up for me. Branch has base salaries that total more than the cap hits Maiocco lists. (2016, 2017)

I also don't understand why Matt is saying we have about $23 mill in space after this deal next year. If you add Spillman and Brooks up that would mean he was still going off the $30 mill space that Matt himself has increased since then. Shit we calculated it at $37-38 mill to begin with and Cohn agreed.

Branch got back to me and said he's not sure. He said the base numbers are directly from the NFLPA. Looks like Matt has become really flaky with his numbers. He started off badly with the $30 mill cap space projection imo.

I noted another recent time where his numbers didn't match up at all and he gave no explanation of the breakdown. If there's a method to the madness it would be helpful for him to break it down - especially this time of year.

I'm sticking with Branch's numbers on this one.

Furthing crunching of the numbers. The total for all the base salaries from the NFLPA equals $29.75 million.

If Matt is correct and the deal is 6 for $37 that could leave a signing bonus of $7.25 million. That is pretty close to the $7.5 million Matt said it was.

The original total for the deal was initially reported at 6 years for $44.5 million. (which would include all bonuses which he probably won't see if he's cut at some point)

We know Brooks is getting a $50k bonus for every game he is active during the regular season. That particular bonus totals $4.8 million if he was active for the entire 6 years.

That leaves fluff bonuses of $2.7 million out there somewhere.

Sweet. Branch just posted the article where he talks about the question I have. Take that Maiocco!!!

San Francisco 49ers – Niner Insider Blog – SFGate.com LB Brooks will earn $750,000 in base salary in 2012

Per the NFLPA, below are Brooks’ annual base salaries. His salary cap figures are in parentheses and are from CSN Bay Area. Yes, his base salary is higher than his cap number in 2016 and 2017. I don’t know why – again, the base salaries are from the NFLPA.

2012: $750,000 ($2.85 million)

2013: $4.3 million ($6.65 million)

2014: $5.15 million ($7.5 million)

2015: $6 million ($8.35 million)

2016: $6.5 million ($6.35 million)

2017: $6.95 million ($5.3 million)

Matt hasn't responded to me on twitter yet as to why the discrepancy. Maybe the NFLPA fugged up. Who knows.

I'll never understand why Paraag gets so much hatred from the older crowd... the guy does a marvelous job. Or how people could have possibly blamed him for the 2-6 win seasons.

People hate(d) the Yorks and saw Paraag as one of the Yorks' lackey. Also there was some irrational fear that Paraag was involved in the personnel decisions and people didn't like the idea of a calculator nerd involved in contracts.

Of course we all know his involvements wasn't in who to sign and who to cut but just the numbers guy which he's excelled at since he's been at it. Off hand I can't think any contract lately that hasn't been team friendly but also fair to the player too.

As far as Brooks goes in the NFL it's all about the guaranteed money as the contract itself is about less meaningful than toilet paper and you'll never see all that money. That's why I laughed when Brown ranted about Palmer not honoring his contract when management can freely ask you to restructure or cut you at anytime.

I remember when he was in the booth telling coaches when to challenge. That's when he got the most hate from fans.

He's been one of the best in the business for a while, though.

cause when our team is losing, fingers point everywhere.

"finger pointing" alone isn't a problem, cause if someone is messing up then its deserved. but when it points at the wrong people for the wrong reasons................

The 49ers recent contract extension with LB Ahmad Brooks is filled with de-escalators, according to a league source, meaning he will have to stay injury-free and achieve subsantial sack totals to receive a maximum average salary of $7.5 million per season.

Brooks received a $7.5 million signing bonus as part of the contract, but there are few other guarantees in a contract signed on Tuesday that is structured heavily on performanced-based incentives. The $17.5 million worth of guarantees are for injury only at the time of signing, not for skill, and that figure could be considerably less if the de-escaltors are triggered.

His base salary of $750,000 for 2012 is guaranteed, and Brooks will be able to make $500,000 in total roster bonuses based on games on the roster, as well as a $100,000 workout bonus.

Brooks has a base salary of $4.3 million in 2013 which is guaranteed for injury at the time he signed the deal. That becomes guaranteed for skill and cap if he’s on the roster April 1 of that year. However, the guaranteed portion can be reduced up to $2.5 million that year if he does not achieve certain sack totals.

In 2014, Brooks has a base of $5.15 million, with $4.95 million becoming guaranteed for injury and skill if he is on the roster on April 1. However, that guaranteed total and base salary can be reduce by up to $2.5 million based on his 2013 sack production.

Brooks can void all de-escalators in the contract if the 49ers win 12 games, he has 93.2 percent playing time that season and San Francisco plays in the conference championship game, or if he has two prior seasons of 12 sacks or more.
