The 49ers recent contract extension with LB Ahmad Brooks is filled with de-escalators, according to a league source, meaning he will have to stay injury-free and achieve subsantial sack totals to receive a maximum average salary of $7.5 million per season.

Brooks received a $7.5 million signing bonus as part of the contract, but there are few other guarantees in a contract signed on Tuesday that is structured heavily on performanced-based incentives. The $17.5 million worth of guarantees are for injury only at the time of signing, not for skill, and that figure could be considerably less if the de-escaltors are triggered.

His base salary of $750,000 for 2012 is guaranteed, and Brooks will be able to make $500,000 in total roster bonuses based on games on the roster, as well as a $100,000 workout bonus.

Brooks has a base salary of $4.3 million in 2013 which is guaranteed for injury at the time he signed the deal. That becomes guaranteed for skill and cap if he’s on the roster April 1 of that year. However, the guaranteed portion can be reduced up to $2.5 million that year if he does not achieve certain sack totals.

In 2014, Brooks has a base of $5.15 million, with $4.95 million becoming guaranteed for injury and skill if he is on the roster on April 1. However, that guaranteed total and base salary can be reduce by up to $2.5 million based on his 2013 sack production.

Brooks can void all de-escalators in the contract if the 49ers win 12 games, he has 93.2 percent playing time that season and San Francisco plays in the conference championship game, or if he has two prior seasons of 12 sacks or more.

Jesus Christ. Talk about sack total motivation. Hopefully we created a beast.

Motivation smotivation.... with Justin Smith and Aldon Smith on the opposite side, drawing the attention of every "extra blocker" Brooks would be a complete failure if he didnt pick up 10 sacks this year

I would top it off with an extra $20K for each forced fumble.

Brooks is gonna be a bargain with this contract. His best shot at getting paid is the team success route and he could still get screwed if he doesn't get enough snaps. (injury) I'm actually shocked he agreed to this deal.

That was a very good signing. Those cap #'s add up to 37 million. I know it can be as high as 44...

The only confusion I have is that he said the Niners should have 23 million in cap space. I thought it was going to be like 38?

Ahmad Brooks gets $8.25 million guaranteed on signing | ProFootballTalk

Plenty of you appreciate the fact that we cut through the incomplete and/or misleading reports regarding the value of a given contract and supply the facts. (Then again, plenty of you don’t, because it’s hardly the most exciting aspect of following the NFL.)

For those of you who don’t like it, we recommend the scroll button. For those of you who do, it’s time to get out your Rain Man notebook and start writing, because we have the details on linebacker Ahmad Brooks‘ new six-year deal with the 49ers, courtesy of a league source with knowledge of the contract.

Brooks received $7.5 million to sign, and his $750,000 base salary for 2012 is fully guaranteed. (Then again, as pointed out last night, the first-year base salary is always as a practical matter guaranteed, because no player gets cut in the first year of a multi-year deal, especially where the base salary represents 10 percent of the signing bonus.)

That’s the extent of the fully guaranteed money in Brooks’ contract.

In 2012, Brooks also will receive a per-game active roster bonus of $31,500 — which for the full season becomes $500,000, and he’s eligible for a workout bonus of $100,000.

For 2013, Brooks has a $4.3 million base salary with an injury guarantee on signing. As of April 1, 2013, the salary becomes fully guaranteed, if Brooks is still on the roster.

The $4.3 million base salary also contains a so-called de-escalator; it can drop by up to $2.5 million based on Brooks’ sack production (or lack thereof) in 2012. The salary also can increase by up to $500,000. The deal contains for 2013 a $46,875 per-game active roster bonus ($750,000 for the year), and a $100,000 workout bonus.

In 2014, the base salary increases to $5.15 million. Of that amount, $4.95 million is guaranteed for injury only at signing. If Brooks is on the roster as of April 1, 2014, the $4.95 million becomes fully guaranteed. There’s a $2.5 million de-escalator tied to sacks in 2013; the de-escalator for 2014 goes away if the de-escalator applies in 2013. (Yep, I already have a headache.) The contract also contains another $46,875 per-game active roster bonus and a $100,000 workout bonus.

For 2015, a $6 million base salary could become partially guaranteed based on a complex formula of “ifs” and “ors.” The main factor for any base salary guarantee in 2015 is that Brooks must be on the roster as of April 1 that year. There’s also a de-escalator of up to $2.5 million based on 2014 sacks. The $46,875 per-game active roster bonus and the $100,000 workout bonus apply once again.

In 2016, the base salary is $6.5 million, with another de-escalator of up to $2.5 million based on 2015 sacks. Ditto for the $46,875 per-game active roster bonus and the $100,000 workout bonus.

In 2017, everything is the same, with the base salary moving to $6.95 million.

So it’s a one-year, $8.25 million fully-guaranteed contract with another $9 million or so in injury guarantees and an annual team option to pull the plug and move on.

Maiocco said it was $50k per. I've never seen so much variation on a player's contract amongst reporters. Total clusterfuck. I'm glad these guys aren't my accountant.

Again, I'm shocked he signed this deal. This says he REALLY wanted to play for the 49ers.

It also says the Niners are COYA with regards to his work ethic. If he doesn't put the effort in and his sack production goes down, so does his paycheck, and the club can part ways if the "money goes to his head" kinda thing. I think it's a great deal for the club, and also a great deal for him because it keeps him motivated and hungry. The de-escalator cancel mechanism of NFC Champ/12 wins etc works in his favor too, if the team does well then he still gets paid.
Paraag hits a homer again. Now if Alex signs a contract that's similarly structured I'd really be impressed.

His sack production needs to go up before it goes down. He hasn't shown he's a 12+ sack guy yet.

Wow, the more numbers that come out, the better this looks. $2.5 million annual performance-based de-escalators? We can effectively cut him any year after this one with minimal hit? That's incredible.

Not quite. The de-escalator clause in 2014 goes away if it's used in 2013.

That said, it's an amazing deal. I don't know why more contracts aren't like this.

The way I read it was he has a maximum salary that is adjusted according to his production, playing time and team record as well as elite play (12 sacks) cause his salary to max out. Did I miss something?

One way for him to prevent a salary reduction is two have two seasons of 12+ sacks.

So my original point is he won't see that money unless he is a sack machine or the team does well. He hasn't shown he's a 12+ sack guy. So I expect his salary to be low.

Good god what a confusing deal. On top of that different sources/articles have some variations in the numbers.
