Broncos to hire Tom McMahon as special teams coordinator
https://www.denverpost.com/2018/01/09/tom-mcmahon-hired-broncos-special-teams-coordinator/
McMahon coached the last four seasons in Indianapolis, and for three of those the Colts’ units ranked among the top 10 in special teams efficiency by Football Outsiders. McMahon also helped McAfee and kicker Adam Vinatieri to a combined three Pro Bowl selections and two first-team all-pro honors in that span.

Well at least he seems to know what he's doing, unlike Olivo.

Wonder how he helped Vinatieri?? A HOFer

Not so quick. This looks Brock level stupid. Was this guy there in 2015?
The Colts ran the worst trick play in NFL history

As dumb as that was the Colts still finished 16th that year in Special Teams, we were 30th this year.

These were his ranks his 4 years in Indianapolis:

2014: 8th
2015: 16th
2016: 5th
2017: 8th

The Colts won 4 games this year and yet they still had the 8th best ST unit, we had 5 wins and finished 30th.

And when he took over in 2014 he got the Colts from 18th in 2013 all the way up to 8th.

If you score a job with Vinatieri as your kicker and McAfee as your punter you're living the life as a special teams coach...

What does this mean??? If Denver finished 32nd we would have won 7 games?

It's just a stat. No need to project a record based off it.

I was saying that even though the Colts were terrible they still had a very good special teams unit thanks to this guy, so if we had him we likely would've been much better since ST cost us quite a few games this year. If we had the 8th best unit who knows we could be in the playoffs even with our terrible Offense thanks to a top 10 ST and Top 5 Defense.

I listened to an interview with Pat McAfee (kicker for the Colts) on 104.3 the Fan this morning. He gushed about how great of a coach "Midge" is. He swears up and down that he's the best coach he's ever worked with in all of his years of athletics, spanning many different sports. He says that McMahon creates an electric atmosphere at practice, is a master of getting everyone's buy in and knows Special Teams inside and out. The guy just couldn't stop gushing. Said that Denver's special teams will do a 180 degree turn next year.

I listened and then I thought of Peyton Manning's comment all those years ago at the Pro Bowl........."a liquored up, idiot kicker". Guess I should temper my enthusiasm.

Pretty sure Manning was talking about Mike Vanderjagt not McAfee, and I don’t think McMahon ever worked with Vanderjagt.

Oh, I'm well aware. We're talking about completely different eras. I was referring to Manning's reference about listening to kickers in general. I guess my sarcasm wasn't clearly articulated!

McAfee was actually a punter. He did both in college though.

punter, kicker......tomato, tomahto. His leg and foot propel the football into the air. Good enough for me.

I know you know.

I just like to correct people on that. Everytime I watch a game with a group of friends someone says "Did they kick it away already"

Nope, they punted it away.

:)

Technically every time you punt the ball you kick it with your foot so your friends are correct and you're just being a football term nazi ;)

But the correct term is punting in the NFL.

If you were kicking you would have your field goal unit out.

or "kicking off" after an extra point.

Team is a kicker and a punter on the team. Not a kicker and a kicker.. (Unless you carry 2 kickers)

Is this getting fun yet? ;)

a punt is a "type of kick " dropped from your hand and does not touch the ground
