If Peyton Manning retires, how far will Tom Brady have to go to break his records?
Updated February 9, 2016 at 9:37 AM; Posted February 9, 2016

By Nick O'Malley

[email protected]

Peyton Manning hasn't announced whether or not he'll actually retire after his Denver Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50.

But if the future Hall of Famer really is calling it a career, then that means it's time to start Legacy Talk when discussing Manning. And as is always the case when breaking down Manning's place as one of our generation's great quarterbacks, it always comes back to how he compares to New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

As it stands, Manning holds the lion's share of all the big cumulative quarterback records (including passing yards and touchdown passes). But even at 38, Brady still has gas in the tank and an outside shot at overtaking those marks.

So what're Brady's chances? For this case, we'll be taking a look at Brady's per-year averages and the gaps between his career totals and Manning's marks.

A reminder: Manning has a big lead in terms of games played. The former Indianapolis Colts QB has played 17 full NFL seasons (he's been in the league for 18 years, but missed 2011 due to his neck injury). Meanwhile, Brady has played just 14 as a full-time starter (he sat his first season and missed almost all of 2007 due to a knee injury).

That means Manning has a three-season lead in terms of building his career totals. Unfortunately for Brady, he'll never get graded on a scale. Fortunately, he's still in strong physical condition and has expressed the desire to play at least three more seasons.

We'll see if it actually happens. But the key number to consider for this comparison is three. If Brady plays three more seasons at the level he is now, there's a good chance he eclipses many of Manning's current record totals.

Will it actually happen? Who knows. We're working entirely with hypotheticals here.

All-time passing yards
Manning: 71,940
Brady: 58,028

Brady trails by 13,912 yards here. Going by his career average (4,144.85), Brady would need to play 3.36 more seasons to break the record. So either three great seasons or four good ones.

All-time passing touchdowns
Manning: 539
Brady: 428

The difference is 111 touchdowns. At a rate of 30.6 touchdowns per season, Brady would likely need four seasons to eclipse this mark. However, Brady's numbers pre-2007 may throw off projections a bit here. He averaged 24.5 touchdowns a year as a starter through 2006. Over his past eight seasons, Brady has averaged 35.1 touchdowns, which means that three seasons of Brady as his best may be enough (but that's asking a lot of a player that will be 41 at the time).

All-time Pro Bowl selections
Manning: 14 (tied with Merlin Olsen and Bruce Matthews)
Brady: 10

This one's a long shot. Brady made the Pro Bowl this year, but posting four more Pro Bowl-level seasons without a snub will be tough. Plus, he'd need five to break it, which is the goal here.

Wins (Playoffs and regular season)
Manning: 200
Brady: 194

Barring a disaster, Brady will break this record in 2016.

Wins (Regular season)
Manning: 186
Brady: 172

Brady needs 14 here, which is a tough task in one season. But if Brady plays two more healthy seasons, this mark will almost assuredly fall. (The Patriots would have to have losing records both years for Brady to fail to break it.)

Largest career TD-INT differential:
Manning: 288
Brady: 278

Even a mediocre (26 TD, 15 INT) season would put Brady over the top. The only concern here is if Brady happens to hang on for a number of bad years late in his career. It's unlikely, but possible.

Playoff losses by a quarterback
Manning: 13
Brady: 9

First-round Playoff losses by a quarterback
Manning: 9
Brady: 2

Brady does not want either of those records. That second one is probably safe.

Consecutive postseasons with a start
Manning: 9
Brady: 7 (twice)

Brady's 2007 ACL injury threw him off here. He would have to make three more postseasons in order to break this one. It's possible, but is contingent on Brady both staying healthy and performing well.

Fourth-quarter comebacks

Manning: 45

Brady: 38

While this one may be considered more Brady's MO, Manning actually has a strong hold on this category. Over 14 active seasons, Brady has averaged 2.7 fourth-quarter comebacks in the regular season. Barring a late-career run, Brady would have to play around three more full seasons to close that gap without a drop-off.

Game-winning drives
Manning: 56
Brady: 48

Once again, 3.43

Records you may have though Manning held but didn't: Pass attempts (Favre, 10,169), completions (Favre, 6,300), Pick sixes (Favre, 31), and...

All-time interceptions
Manning: 251
Brady: 150

OK, Manning doesn't hold the all-time record (that's Brett Favre's at 336). But here's a fun fact: Brady's career-high for interceptions in a season is 14 (three times). Manning's average over 18 NFL seasons is 13.9. That number jumps to 14.76 if you take out 2011 (the one he missed because of injury.)

Single Season Records

Single-season passing yards
Manning: 5,477 (2013)
Brady: 5,235 (2011)

Single-season passing TDs
Manning: 55 (2013)
Brady: 50 (2007)

These are two of the big ones Manning still holds, and would be contingent on Brady having a career year in either stat to break them. It's possible. But for it to happen, the Patriots have to get their wide receiver and offensive line situation worked out first.
