There were two problems with Knighton and the broncos resigning him. The first being his weight issue. When he hit FA some said he was getting close to 380 and was in terrible shape. Every off season he showed up overweight. Not exactly the example you want shown to the young guys. Throw in because he showed up overweight he struggled to stay on the field. I think he played less than 50% of all snaps last year on defense. Yet he was wanting to be paid big time. Which really that is my 2nd point is he was wanting something in that $7-8 million range. While he was good he wasn't that good. Couldn't pay that much at the expense of other players that can impact the team.

Appreciate the kind words. I have appreciated that Elway can be the cold calculated businessman that is needed in the FO. Even when a player is a fan favorite he knows who is worth keeping and who has to go. Part of the problem with success is it means you will lose some great players along the way as can't pay them all.
