Yep...the guy that had Stephen Hawkings back....

Career ended before he turned 30 I believe...ended up in the Reds scouting department...I remember some article over 10 years ago that many thought of him as a future GM even back then..incredibly smart guy...

down, i see shoulder...we may both be wrong?

In his years as a starter, Naehring was a fine-fielding third baseman and solid all-around offensive player. He hit .307 with 10 HR and 57 RBI for the AL East Champion Red Sox in 1995. The following season, he hit .288 and set career highs with 17 HR and 65 RBI. In his final campaign in 1997, Naehring was on his way to having his finest season, as he batted .286 with 9 HR and 40 RBI through just 70 games, but a shoulder injury forced him to miss more than half the games that year. He played his final game on June 23, 1997 against the Toronto Blue Jays. Naehring homered in his second to last at bat.

down, you were right

For the next month, Naehring played in just about every game (mostly at SS) and hit pretty well, posting a triple slash line (AVG/OBP/SLG) of .271/.333/.412. Unfortunately for the promising young short stop (who was being compared to Cal Ripken Jr. at the time), his season came to an end on August 13 when he suffered a back injury, which would prove prophetic to the rest of his career. The Red Sox would make the playoffs for the 3rd time in 5 seasons that year, but the rookie would have to watch from the sidelines (they fell to the mighty Oakland A's in a 4 game sweep). In the offseason, the Red Sox discovered that Naehring’s legs were different lengths and were the cause of the back issues.

elbow, back and shoulder

It's how I remember him...he was brought in with a ton of fanfare...

Did anyone mention Jose offerman to CH?...who could also qualify as a "star that was let go in FA", though he largely sucked for boston....he's Boston's Tartabull even has/had the legal problems to boot....

Beating someone with a bat > deadbeat dads...

Sox win again...

but man could that guy catch a pop fly in the outfield going back from his SS position

forget who it was, some Sox announcer kept saying that over and over. trupiano maybe

wasnt he an all star for Sox one year?

Pretty sure it was back...he had larry birds back of today as a 27 year old...tough break because he had a chance for a very solid career at 3rd base...glad he's doing well...a staple in pawtucket when I was a kid...part of the group of guys that got me into tracking sox minor leaguers back in the day...
