I don't think it's a situation where he refuses to learn - he does speak English a little. I don't know if he's just not good at it or is uncomfortable with it or what. I think it's a self-confidence/social comfort thing more than anything. Here's a caption I just found on a Caps' blog RussianMachineDontBreak...

"Eavesdropping on Alex Semin’s phone call, featuring fluent English that gets quieter the nearer you get."

During the press conference just last night he used a translator to answer questions. I think he's just not comfortable talking in English to the public, which I can totally understand.

I agree with you too eloco, but they signed him to the one year contract relatively early last season so I don't think that played a major factor in his performance. I've heard OV say several times that Semin is his best friend. That makes me believe he could possibly take less to stay in DC. (Several role players have already done so) One thing that troubles me though, is his reluctance to learn English. You'd think that if his long term plans were to stay over here, he'd at least show some interest.


Whatever happens, I will continue to enjoy watching him in a Caps uniform and if he leaves, I will wish him the best.

Well, I said it back at the swamp, but 1 of the 4 "young guns" is going to be the odd man out or else they are going to be very top heavy like the Sharks and Hawks are. It's not OV or Backstrom, so It's either going to be Green or Semin, and I wouldn't be surprised either way. I really don't know who I'd chose, but I'm glad that I'm not GMGM and don't have to make the decision.
