Yeah, but you see next season's gonna be different. Pelini and staff are going to magically turn on the conference and national title quality coaching.

Did you miss the memo?

My apologies, I haven't checked my email yet today.

^^^ that has a Linus/Great Pumpkin vibe to it :laugh3:

I can't remember another comparable season with so many injuries hitting one side of the ball (offense). The defense had so many growing pains. Talented youth + returning starters has me looking for good things next season (9 wins?). Bo needs to get his team to the next level. At least Nebraska won't be the B1G Conference newbie next season.

Congrats to Oregon, Alabama, and Nebraska for getting at least 9 wins a year for 6 straight years. All 3 teams have so much to show for it. I mean just look at all the accomplishments.

Alabama: 2 conference titles in the best conference in the country, 5 BCS bowl games, 3 national titles, 27-8 record vs ranked teams, and never finished a season ranked lower than 11th in the coach's poll.

Oregon: 3 conference titles, 4 BCS bowl games, 1 national title game appearance, 19-8 record vs ranked teams, and never finished a season ranked lower than 11th in the coach's poll.

Nebraska: ...well...um...let's see...they never finished higher than 14th in the coach's poll, oh and they are now 9-14 vs ranked teams.

Yep, congrats to Nebraska and Bo Pelini. You deserve a pat on the back and a raise!!!

Not saying any of that or giving Bo praise.......

I just bumped the thread because it is now a fact and there is no denying it. Maybe he hasn't won the Championships that Alabama and Oregon have, but the consistency does raise some questions....

Is Bo getting the best out of what he has to work with?
Does Bo just have subpar recruiting talent to build off of compared to Alabama and Oregon?
Is Bo just not getting his talent developed like Alabama and Oregon and simply finding a way to scrape out wins?

It's a very odd situation we have here. On the one hand we're posting more 9 win seasons than anyone else in the land, including some very very good programs who have very good coaches. On the other hand, any time we face superior talent, we are indeed always inferior......can never rise above it.

No matter how you try to spin it, there is no luck involved in posting 6 straight 9 win seasons. There are obviously issues holding Nebraska back from being great.....but it is what it is. There are no excuses for losing Championship games as well as other big games, and there are no excuses for why you have 6 straight 9 win seasons either.

I'll always say it begins up front in the trenches.

I think the rest of it is just a matter of putting the pieces together. It's playing disciplined/fundamental football. "Executing" as Bo would say.

It's a management thing.

I wouldn't say it is when we face superior talent because it often is lesser talent, just more disciplined in the fundamentals.

Not really fair to just throw those names out there without any context. Look at some of the situations with some of those coaches.

Briles got a job at Baylor who hadn't had a winning team since 1995.
Petrino had his own issues off the field to get himself fired.
Fairchild took over Colorado St, enough said.
Cutcliffe took over a Duke team that hadn't had a winning season since 1994.
Sumlin got promoted to Texas A&M.
Jerry Kill got promoted to Minnesota.
June Jones took over SMU who hadn't had a winning season since 1997.
Fedora got promoted to UNC.

Most of these guys didn't come into great situations and have either done well enough to get a better job or has turned their program around.

As i recall Bo took over a team that had a losing record as well, not as bad a team as some of the others but a losing team.

I understand and I agree but it was no ordinary losing season team. A team that was a year removed rom winning 9 games and playing for the conference title. A team and coaching staff that we all know completely quit half way through the season.

How many of those other teams were that closely removed from having a chance to win their conference title and having their coach be fired? It's different if you have like Michigan where the coach retires or other places like Hawaii where their coach left for a better job.

Bo did inherit talent, which is how he was able to have success right away towards the end of year 1.....

But let's not underestimate how poorly developed those players were when Callahan left. I mean, we were one of the worst teams in the country in 2007.

point taken. I still think it is one hell of an accomplishment for a first time head coach though.

I agree and I give him props for the number of wins but, and there is a huge but, there are lots of other things that bring him down.

I agree , Bo has a way to go before he will be in the upper crust of coaching and he is stubborn when it comes to changing. Hopefully he can evolve as time goes by. We shall see soon enough.

It all comes back to hiring proven coordinators. Does the team get better start to finish after the coordinators get a few more seasons under their belt?
