Sorry if this is posted in the draft thread. Didn't feel like reading 70+ pages to find out. With that said what is the consensus on him? Being a State fan I am a little biased but I think this guy can come in a be groomed to take the Cowboy's spot in a couple years. Even last year when I first took notice of him I said to myself that this kid reminds me of Smith.

Now the real question is how high does he go? Top 10 is out of the question to move up their but 15-20 is defiantly a possibility. Also I know we may need to upgrade NT, and or C but personally C can wait and other then Star who would be drafted in the top 10 what other prospect is their out there that would be better then getting Werner?

Would like to hear from the draft guys particular on this Pozz, Bingo, Clyde, Imac, Ray etc etc buy anyone feel free to chime in

I'm just impressed you posted an umlaut...

I think he ends up going around the 10th to 15th pick.

Unless the Niners trade up, there is no chance of him dropping to where the Niners set to pick. CBS sports currently rank him #2 overall and I have seen mock drafts having him going as high as second...

SMU has a very good DE, but don't know if he's draft eligible?

Yea but that is pre combine stuff so I take it with a grain of salt. Also I doubt they are projecting reaches for QB's which always happen to push players down. And with no marquee QB's in this draft alot of people will be willing to trade down mind you I am not willing to go up to top 10 but if he is around at 11 on I try to make that trade.

Werner is a really good prospect, but there's no way I'd trade up for him. This isn't exactly a top-heavy draft class. Moore is the only pass-rusher who stands out as a franchise-changing guy (Moore is only 20 years old by the way; Werner is 23), and even he doesn't impress me nearly as much as Aldon Smith did in college. I see Moore as a Brian Orakpo caliber player. Werner strikes me as a guy who'd do much better as a 4-3 DE, and even then I don't think he'll be anywhere near all-pro. Maybe a 10 sack guy.

If the Niners trade up for a defensive player, it should be a DL not a potantial OLB. Like Hankins, Richardson, or MAYBE Ezekiel Ansah (but he has some huge red flags) I'd love a situational pass-rusher, but that isn't worth a top 10 pick.

Warmack, on the other hand, might be the best player in thee entire draft.

...plus I'm a little wary of FSU pass-rushers.

You think that Werner is athletic enough to stand up? I remember Justin Smith was around 260 when he came out of Mizzu. I just see alot of the Cowboy in Werner.

I have watched very little of him. He must be Cowboy strong because those arms look like they have never seen a weight room.

I'm pretty sure Justin Smith was around 270 when he came out of college. Maybe even a few pounds more. He was always a bigger DE.

Werner is listed at 255. He's a little too lanky to play DE IMO.

It also worries me that every FSU DE in the last 2 years has gotten around 9-12 sacks, and Werner always rushes against the RT (kind of like Mingo from LSU).

He will not fall past #9. If Somehow he does, he will not fall past the Bucs. I know for a fact the Bucs will draft him if he is available. Unless Dee is there. But I seriously Doubt 2 Top 7 players will be available when the Bucs pick at #13.

We are both correct kinda he was 267 at the combine. I knew Werner was 255 but I think he will be 260 by combine so it would be a wash. I didn't know that Smith was as fast as he was at the combine. Here is a link I found with his measurables from the combine

Justin Smith - DE - Missouri - 2001 NFL Combine Results

I'm not worried about 13 because I am willing to trade up to 11 to get him and I thought the Bucs D line was pretty stout already? Not saying you don't need depth but I figured the Bucs would target a DB

Supreme,

You basically said what I was planning to say on my writeup about him. He is alike like Justin when Justin was a prospect. Even as a rookie Justin was considered to be a good player at his position (4-3 DE); he was never considered an elite player for the Bengals throughout his stint there. Cinci thought he had peaked and as a result decided not to offer him a huge deal to keep him. When he signed with us as a FA, even we sort of experimented with him. We tried him at OLB, he did okay but you can tell he wasn't totally comfortable playing in space. He looked out of place though, he gave us descent production playing OLB.

That led to people questioning the signing and wondered if he was able to fit our scheme (undersized as a DE to play in a 3-4, and lacked the athleticism to stand up and play LB). He learned the position and mastered his craft over the years - he was always a strong man, but it seems as though he got stronger as he got older (except for this year, he regressed just a bit IMO). Werner, is the same exact player and I see a lot of similarities in terms of having the brute strength, motor, intelligence/smarts, size to make the transition to DE in a 3-4 scheme. Werner like Chris Long, and Justin Smith - would not show immediate success on the field because it will take 2 to 3 years for him to fully grow into the position and be considered a "dominant" player. He has the frame, work ethic and drive to bulk up more (get stronger and bigger to play that role for us). Unfortunately, like someone stated earlier, there is no way on earth we would be able to draft him. So this is a moot point when it's all said and done. I'm a diehard FSU fan like you, I would love to get him to play for us. I rank him higher than Moore of A&M, so that says a lot about my opinion of Werner. He is a monster as a pass rusher, and is so unfair with his ability of stuffing the run. It would take time for him to grow into the position (3-4 DE because at this stage I don't think he can hold the point of attack for 60 minutes in the NFL playing the 5 technique. That's hard for someone his size).

Our DLine is Solid, but we lack a Pass Rusher.
DE - Clayborn is solid, but he is not Better than a Good Pass Rusher, he is a High Motor guy who will get more sacks on effort than Skill.
DE - Bowers could be a pass rushing specialist but Injuries have slowed him down, he has developed nicely though. But you cannot expect he will not get hurt again or even that his old injuries will not affect him later on.
DE - Bennett is an all around, better than decent, DE.

IMO, even in their best years they will never be a Force off the Edge. The Bucs need a Pass Rushing Force. We are Solid but we need that one player who can get consistent pressure on the QB on 3rd Downs. IMO Werner is the perfect fit for the Bucs.

I also think the Bucs will Trade up to #8. I think the Bills take a QB, and whatever QB they take will be there at #13. IMO they take Dee from Bama.

I think Werner goes to Arizona, Cleveland, or the Jets. Though if he falls past Cleveland then it might be the Niners that trade up with the Bills, depending on how far the next QBs are thought to be taken.

My sentiments exactly again I am biased but I every time I watch Werner play I see similarities of Smith when he was at Mizzu. Also if it takes 2 years for Werner to grow that would be great because he would be learning behind Smith who himself said that the has 3-4 years left last year. And I know this is a pipe dream and he won't be available but know one thought the Cowboys would move up to get Claiborne either so you never know

yep, on offense you need a QB, on defense you need a pass rusher.
