You have no idea what you are talking about. In the 80's Texas was an after thought. A&M was the power house and Texas was the little football brother.

IN the late 80's through the late 90's, yes, Texas was in a down cycle. However, even in the 80's, Texas played for something the Aggies never did and that was for a national championship in '83, only to lose to UGA 10-9. You have no idea what you are talking about, and again, A&M had to cheat their asses off just to be relevant......

I thought there wasn't any National Title games until 1998 ala BCS. How could Texas have played Georgia in a National Title game in 1982? Also Georgia doesn't have the 1982 Title and they won so clearly it wasn't a National Title game.

Ha ha, I would expect an LSU fan to think this. They didn't discover football until 2003..........

The 1983 NCAA Division I-A football season ended with the University of Miami winning their first national championship over perennial power Nebraska in the Orange Bowl.
The 31-30 win over Nebraska is still talked about as one of the greatest games of all time, not only for its last minute finish, but for its role in changing the face of college football. Miami came into the game ranked #5, but losses by Texas in the Cotton Bowl Classic and Illinois in the Rose Bowl launched them into the #1 spot.[2]

And Auburn got fucked because the media wouldn't give a national title to a team from the South even though Auburn beat Florida (who beat Miami), Texas, and FSU that year as well as Bama.

No national championship games but plenty of games that were understood to decide the champion.

e.g., for a homer example, Wisconsin (#2) vs. USC (#1), in the Rose Bowl, back in the 1960s. That was basically a national championship games because there was no question that the winner was going to win a title.

To be perfectly correct there is no NCAA sanctioned championship game...just a Gentleman's Agreement.
