Just read that we are about 7mil under the Cap. Vince is going to eat up 11min of cap space next yr. If we no longer have Vince, we would save about 8mil. SO, what do we do? Trade or cut him? Does anyone in their right mind think that Vince will restructure his contract to stay with this team? I don't. I am kind of torn with just trying to trade him now and see what you can get, or what would you take for him. Going to be interesting to see how this plays out, we don't have an owner out their that will give us a 1st rd pick for an aging DL....

Well he won't restructure for less, why would he? And 11 Million next year is quite a lot but he is one of the better DTs/NTs in the game. I suspect the Pats will not be able to trade him with those numbers and cutting him only frees us of some cap space. I suspect he will be here.

I watched to 60 minutes sports episode on Big Vince.
Bill has a rule that no injured player will travel with the team.
Bill made an exception to that rule for Vince because he wanted him there, Vince was on the sideline for every home and away game.
Yes, Vince will be a Patriot next year.
Whether they restructure is a different story.

He might be restructured to a ~3 year deal, though. That would save the cap hit while giving Vince more security (and more overall money) in his contract and could be mutually acceptable.

Agreed.. I think he will stay with the pats . They will try to restructure a more cap friendly deal. If he balks they can always calk the raiders or Houston and make a deal. Say mallet and Vince for a first rounder..

The 2014 cap hasn't been determined yet but according to ESPN's Field Yates, it should fall somewhere between $123 and $128 mil. According to his reckoning, the Pats have $4.1 mil available to rollover in 2014, based on that...here's what is known:

If the cap were to, hypothetically, be set at $126 million, the Patriots would have a $130.1 million allowance due to their rollover space. Now, as things currently stand, the Patriots have $128.2 million committed to their salary cap next year, which may make one say that they're in poor cap space. That's not exactly the case, as the team can easily create space with moves in the form of a release. Defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga, due $3.5 million for next season, is an example of a potential cap casualty.
Also, one of the big issues of the offseason will be if the Patriots receive significant relief on the cap as it relates to Aaron Hernandez.

I am sure Ander Carter is another that can go, and we have to consider 2015 we have a lot of FA in 2015. Not sure the league will or should provide cap relief for AH, it's not their fault and not the fault of other teams. We rolled the dice on him, I just can't see it happening, it would be nice.

I agree that Vince can be a game changer, but at that cost, and coming off his injury. I also noticed that Vince was there for the away games, I thought it was strange too, but makes sense(good call Yankee). I guess this AHern deal is messing this team up. I thought this article was interesting....

They have to make room somewhere....but not sure where....

If he'll restructure great. Just, they can't cut him if he won't. They're not going to find someone to spend the what, $6.5 million they'd save cutting him (since there's still a cap hit if they cut him) who brings as much to the table as he does.

Ideally they'd restructure in a way that gives Vince more security over 2-3 years and gives them more cap flexibility, so everyone wins, but we'll see.

Maybe the injury will be to much to come back from and he could retire and take the D-Line Coord position

He has only a 33% chance of returning to the same level of play. That was in a story recently.

And one would have to question if he would be willing to further risk additional injury? I mean that comes down to Vince and the med staff I know but it may have an effect on all this.

Nobody can forsee a person becoming a psychopath or a serial killer. The Pats should receive cap relief so they can replace him with a player/players that provide the same performance or value

There's a risk of restructuring too if he wants to play. Do they take one big hit in his last year or risk a few more years of cap pain?

The story said players return to the same level of play only 33% of the time. That's probably misleading, though.

If you're a bubble player and suffer this injury, your career is over. If you're a journeyman, you likely get cut in many cases. Even if you're a star, if you're on the older side, your trajectory is downhill anyway; Vince is unlikely to return to his top form after this, but if he hadn't been hurt he'd still be unlikely to return to top form next year just because he's on the older side and his play will likely decline year by year.

The important number isn't how often players return to form; it's how often players with job security resume their previous trajectory.

Goodell has that power from what I recall but I think it comes into play after a conviction.

Goodell has broad powers, but he's also made a point in the past of forcing teams to live with their character risks when things go wrong. It's not like Hernandez had no warning signs - he had a history of problems including gang affiliations.

I believe the contract they sign with Hernandez would turn out to be void if he's convicted of the shootings from before he signed it, in which case the cap relief would likely be automatic (as they'd get their money back).

(If Hernandez is implicated in the double murder, then the Patriots will get a credit for this past season on their cap, in addition to Hernandez’s cap disappeared for the upcoming season) I would post the article, but I'm not sure if I can post other web sites here. He also said the Pats got full credit for Jon Fanene $2,566,667 which they can carry over to this year which total is 8.7 million.
