if you like a sputtering 1st half offense, inability to score regularly in the red zone, a plethora of field goals instead of TDs, then by all means worship at the altar of bevell. ignore that we have a top 3 QB and a top 3 defense for his entire tenure that has masked a lot of his deficiencies, which are numerous.

Though not #1 in the league in either red zone or first half scoring - both stats are more than respectable.

Red Zone Scoring:
2012 - 16th 53.85%
2013 - 14th 53.23%
2014 - 20th 51.52%
2015 - 16th 55.56%

1st Half Scoring:
2012 - 9th 12.9
2013 - 10th 12.7
2014 - 15th 11.0
2015 - 13th 11.4

Big picture. The Seahawks offense is a highly consistent group - putting up points at a franchise historical pace. An average of 411.5 points per season the last 4 years, a number that ranks 6th in the NFL. Of the 5 teams ahead of them on that list - only New England has outscored the Seahawks in each of the 4 years. We've had the #1 scoring defense those 4 years - which has led to the #1 point differential in the NFL over that span (+639). I'd say that the system works pretty well - despite fans not understanding how well it actually works.

What I liked from last years offense is it showed it could go open up the offense, with the pass and make it work. Always thought they could, now we've seen it happen on the field. It's a good felling knowing if need be, the Seahawks can move the ball through the air.

Bevell has always had the ability to call good games, he was just never very consistent. Last year he made some great adjustments in the second half of the season and the offense really took off. Credit where credit is due.

However, let's not pretend like he doesn't have a history of putting up goose eggs in the first half of big games and making extremely questionable decisions in clutch situations. It appears he may have turned the corner after opening up the playbook more for Russ, so for now I have no problem with him.

Pretty sure every OC has his ups and downs. Truly all you need to do is read posts on teams boards to understand that, even the Pats board. Personally felt like Bevell success last year should have quieted the critics, but maybe not. This year if the offense does well, surely even the most die hard critics will have to say uncle. Right.....?

Completely agree on that point. Like I said, I was very impressed with what he did last year. I'm just saying that a lot of the criticism he had in the past was warranted. It was more than just "ups and downs" IMO. When he was bad, he was bad to the point where you wondered what the hell you just watched. When he was bad they were putting up goose eggs in the first half with < 100 total yards. It's possible some of his struggles were due to Carroll telling him to put training wheels on the offense with a young QB. After what happened last year I can't help but think this was a factor.

But on the plus side even when Bevell was bad he and Carroll did a great job of adjusting after a garbage half which kept Seattle in games. Any issues he had with calling a bad string of plays he could usually make up for with adjustments in the second half. And yeah, that worked. But it was frustrating as hell to watch the offense be so bipolar.

Right now it's looking like he has his shit figured out though so I'm optimistic about the offense this season.

Fans always want to pretend like play calling defines how good an OC is. Game plan and execution do. Play calling is the byproduct of the game plan.

And fans will consider plays with positive results to be "good play calls" and those with negative results are "bad" calls.

Exactly right. The infamous Super Bowl interception being the perfect example of that. That play works and the Seahawks coaches were brilliant but it didn't work so they were idiots. And it all came down to execution.

I kinda wanted him to be the Tennessee HC because of his work with RW. I figure he could really help MM adapt to the pro game and thrive.

But I wanted no part of him calling plays.

Why, he'd be an improvement over any offensive play caller the Titans have ever had.

True. Still don't want him calling plays.

Get a guy like Tressman to run the passing game.

Bevel's brutal playcall in the SB...the stink will never wear off that one.

I don't think he called a bad game during that Super Bowl - There was just one play that wasn't executed properly and the defense made a great play. Otherwise, the Super Bowl had been called very well - and the offense had played a great game.
