I voted Carlin, just for personal preference and because he did stand-up for like freaking 56 years, and compiled something like 14 hours of material.

However, both were equally amazing and equally as groundbreaking. The two "god fathers" of stand-up.

Carlin had range, where most comedians dont... He had sets where he was doing angry comedy like dennis leary, sets of sillyness like jim gafffigan, sets of wittyness, sets of insultish comedy...

He Mastered all the forms of great standup- he even sang songs occasionally...
Most comedians only stayed with their style... Carlin mastered them all...

Well I haven't seen much of his stuff but what I have seen was funny. I will be looking for more of his stand-up in the future.

his improv work is increcible, but not his standup, imo.
