Disagree as things stand right now. Still back a few yrs. ago it was the best rivalry. I became a Red Sox fan during a game with the Yankees in 2003.

I was watching a bit of MLB Network last night during the preview of the Yanks/BoSox series when John Smoltz said that this was easily the best rivalry in all sports

In all sports????? Really??

Agree or disagree
Without reading all the replies, I'd say this is a rivalry that exists in the minds of the East Coast media because after March, most of them are just waiting for hockey to start.

In all sports? As in maybe not including Michigan-Ohio State, Oklahoma-Texas, Duke-UNC or even Yale-Harvard?

Used to be.

Now, I would say its hard to pick one.

Blue Jays/Rangers
Cavs/Warriors

All that come to mind

Absolutely. El Clasico and the Manchester Derby are awesome, especially right now. Also add in Celtic vs Rangers which is well known in the football world as being one of the most violent/political/historical rivalries.

I will say, historically, I lean towards Liverpool vs Man U. Man City is just recently becoming a consistent threat
The Roman Derby is pretty nasty, too, but like the Old Firm I think they lose points because at least one of the teams usually sucks.

I'd throw North London into the ring as the best derby in England but if both teams can get back to contending Liv-Utd is the Yankees-Sox of that league.

Nothing rivals El Clasico right now, especially with the two best players in the world (ever?) playing against each other for the last 8 years and both teams dominating Europe during that span.

Disagree. (1) I think the best rivalry in sports fluctuates over time. Yankees/Red Sox isn't "much watch television" on a national level right now. Due to the young talent on each roster, it could become that again, but as of this moment it's not.

(1) For smaller non geographical rivalries yes ... the Red Wings had a great short term rivalry with the Avalanche ... The Cavs and the Warriors be another example.

Yanks and the Red Sox are long term ... I don't have a dog in the fight (apologies to Michel Vick), but I dislike the Red Sox because of the rivalry ... it's a great one.

I always think Michigan/ohio state

The rivalry is long term, but whether or not it's the best rivalry is what fluctuates.

Between the Marlins winning the World Series and The Greatest Choke in Sports History that followed in 04, Aaron Boone is a distant memory.

I love how the Yankees are the greatest choke in sports history, but 4 times it has been done in hockey. Twice since the Yankees did it, and one of those was a Boston team.

Glasgow Celtic v Glasgow Rangers is an intense Derby. Also Scotland v England at international football is a massive game.

I would maybe add:

Celtics - Lakers
Ali - Frazier
CUBS - Cardinals
any team that plays the DALLAS COWBOYS (49ers, Washington,Packers, Eagles)
Nicklaus - Palmer
Federer - Nadal - Djokavic
Brady - Manning
