I would make a case that the LOTR is truly a trilogy since all of these are incomplete films without the others.
You can't say that about the Godfather or the Matrix, The Terminator, Alien or even Star Wars I. If those sequels didn't happen the first films would still standalone as a film just fine. You can't say that about LOTR

I would actually argue that Godfather counts just as much as KB, LOTR, Hobbit, Matrix 2/3...

I think the Godfather still ends with Michael as the new Don. The door closes and the story could end there. The end of the Fellowship of the Ring ends with Sam saying a "We'll see Mr Frodo" and...
