There's no rule preventing a lateral in that situation. And they're giving these players far too much credit if they think they're intelligent enough to think of that in the split second they have to make that decision.

The fumble forward is nothing like a lateral.

A lateral, by definition, is legal because it is a sideways pitch.

Fumbling forward would be like a forward pass, which would give an unfair advantage.

Knowing you are going to be stopped short of the goal/marker, it makes every sense to fumble forward and chance a recovery by your own team since you'd turn it over on downs anyway.

The fumble forward rule stops this.

I don't know. The Steelers don't seem to be able to help themselves and they start passing when the run is working. He'll probably get to 100+ but play calling on their side will keep him from being a larger factor. Need to get some first downs on this drive and give the D a break.

AJ is a big part of the game plan and I like it.

Steelers have been one of the worst against the deep pass...they are bringing pressure, and yet no one is taking advantage of the open middle of the field, or any 1-1 matchups with the CB/Safety.
