I rewatched it. He was barely passed the LOS. 2 yards away from the 1st down.

Not a bad call though...too long to kick a FG, to short to punt...though, I agree...a regular offenseive play would have been better. Of course, maybe a run with Hill on 3rd and 2 would have been better than that pass call. Especially if you had an idea of going for the fake on 4th down.

Though, the fake could have been by a certain look and not by call, but still....

The rule is stupid. It makes no sense at all. I understand the fumble out of bounds rule, but the 4th down rule is dumb.

Why does Marv always try to outsmart himself?

It keeps runners who know they're going to be stopped short of the 1st down marker on 4th down from intentionally "fumbling" the ball forward to try to get the 1st down.

There's no rule preventing a lateral in that situation. And they're giving these players far too much credit if they think they're intelligent enough to think of that in the split second they have to make that decision.
