Just because you're a veteran, doesn't just automatically make you better. We're not winning a Super Bowl this season. Play the rookies and next year, you can talk Super Bowl

Agree, I think the ship has sailed for a vet. Even if they signed a guy that was let go they'll need to learn the offense....and they'll take away from the development of the young guys who need PT to get better. At this point I'd say just roll with Green, Sanu, Shipley and Jones as your core WR's.

I doubt we're EVER winning a SB, so maybe we should just stop trying altogether.

The point of a vet is to have a guy who won't make mistakes running incorrect routes and due to their experience will be able to adapt with any QB at a seemingly quick rate. Gaffney was an excellent example of this. So, unless a rookie is AJ Green or similar, a vet will always be a better option than a rookie in the short term.

I guess in my way of thinking all the good vets have been snatched up. I would've been all for signing one of the guys that went at the beginning of FA and could've got behind Gaffney I suppose...but Braylon Edwards doesnt do much for me. The guy lacks professioalism and consistency (which are the two exact things that you want out of a vet...especially with a stable of young WR's).

At some point you have to stop just signing veteran stopgaps and build something. We drafted two highly thought of WRs and I would much rather roll with them than bring in another TO

What veteran stopgaps? We've tried all of 2 - Coles and TO -and even those were on an entirely different roster filled with veterans. Given all those other veterans are now gone, that comment isn't valid. It actually makes sense to bring in some veterans now. The correct comment would have been: "at some point you have to stop just bringing in young talent."

"Highly thought of" is an exaggeration.

Jones is the most technically sound receiver in this class, and he has enough athleticism to play the X (split end) or the Z (flanker).
Marvin Jones, Fourth-Ranked Receiver in 2012 Draft - NYTimes.com

After watching his game tapes, Greg Cosell of NFL Films said that Jones “displayed the widest catching radius of any wide receiver I evaluated.”

"He can come in and compete from day 1"-Mike Mayock
NFL Videos: Bengals pick Marvin Jones No. 166

This is a steal for the Bengals—Jones could have easily gone in the third round. He'll take a leadership role in Cincinnati and should be on the field from day one.
Cincinnati Bengals 2012 NFL Draft Picks: Grades, Results and Analysis | Bleacher Report

Third-day gem: Cal receiver Marvin Jones might end up being better than Sanu. Jones isn't a burner, but he knows how to get open and run routes.
Draft Grades: Bengals' haul gets high praise; Saints flunk the weekend - NFL - CBSSports.com News, Rumors, Scores, Stats, Fantasy

Marvin Jones (California) – 6017, 198, hands 10”. Is a physical possession receiver. He gained separation with his route savvy and sneaky speed. He stood out on Monday when many receivers dropped balls, he snatched everything in sight. Can adjust to poorly thrown passes.-Dan Shonka of Ourlads scouting service.
Wide Receiver Film Notes: Senior Bowl | Ourlads' NFL Football & Scouting Blog

Rotoworld's Josh Norris has made this comparison, as well. "That’s the kind of a guy I think Marvin Jones could be," said Rang. "I mean, Chad Johnson, or Ochocinco, whatever he calls himself these days, I don’t know if Jones is going to have that kind of a career, but he’s similar in that he’s just a guy the whole nation is sleeping on." Jones runs crisp routes with a wide catch radius, in the same vein as Ocho. He projects as a day-two pick.-Rotoworld

After watching his game tape, NFL Films guru Greg Cosell observed that Cal WR Marvin Jones displayed the "widest catching radius of any wide receiver I evaluated."

15. Marvin Jones, California, 6-2, 199. Jones has very good body control and runs nice routes for a big man. He can get off the jam and separate from defenders easily. He is pretty polished and was very productive in college.-Dan Pompei.

But I'm sure you're right. Thought highly of is an exaggeration.

In that sense the "highly thought of" description can be applied to just about any player drafted. These people do nothing but drool over the prospects and their potential. There's probably a thread like this on every board on every site.

"Highly thought of" in the sense that'll they'll be productive from day 1 which is the concern...not a chance...unless of course your sources are bleacherreport and some random guy that writes for the nytimes. And even then, one of the comments was COMPETING day 1. Whoopdee damn doo. We need production, not competition.

I kind of took it as competing with Sanu for wr#2
these guys will also be competing for time as wr#3, although if healthy.

Play the rooks at this point. They cannot develop if they do not play. If the Bengals think these guys are going to be a big part of the future let them go through growing pains now (they'll have to at some point). Plus, these guys seem bright enough to not have any issues learning the playbook like Simpson.Sanu is constantly praised as hardworking and intelligent. LEt them make their mistakes and hopefully they can give you some production too.

It's not as though they're going to catch like 5 balls and run around like the keystone kops out there. They're also not going to have to catch 75 passes. Green, Gresham, and Shipley will probably all be targeted more.

As I said earlier, at this point...bringing in a Vet doesn't do much for me. Earlier on, yeah. Maybe if someone gets a surprise cut...sure. Take a look.

But if there is anyone who can take a rookie WR and get the most out of him on offense...it's Gruden. I have faith in his ability to work with what he'll have. Especially with the return of Shipley.

Rutgers used Sanu as a goal line wildcat threat, evidently he can throw the ball rather well for a Wide Receiver and he's a threat as a runner (YAC!)

his college stats include 9 rushing TDs and 4 passing TDs

He's like our Tebow... without the tebowing... and the press core... and haters swearing every time he's mentioned.
