The Bengals would hope that an overweight player who doesn't fit their system would be available for them to select with one of their 1st Round Picks.

excerpt~

We've pointed out several times before that a dark horse pick for the Cincinnati Bengals in the first round could actually be a linebacker, despite the fact Rey Maualuga, Thomas Howard, Manny Lawson are signed through 2012. Maybe a linebacker/defensive end hybrid that could be one of the top pass rushing prospects? That sounds pretty Lewisonian, right? According to Tony Pauline with Sports Illustrated and DraftInsider.Net, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis is hoping that Alabama's Courtney Upshaw is still available when Cincinnati's on the clock with their second first-round pick.

I would hate this pick. With all the holes we have, lets draft a position we DON'T need.

I like Upshaw. He's a baller. I'd be good with seeing him in stripes....especially if they got DeCastro at 17. Not buying a word of it though. Honestly, even the Bengals are not stupid enough to transparently telegraph what they want to do in the draft.

Per Joe Reedy both Michael Brockers and Courtney Upshaw visited the Bengals this week.

Brockers wasn't the only defensive prospect of note visiting the #bengals. Alabama LB Courtney Upshaw was here on Wednesday

I like Brockers too...I think i they go strictly by needs though they should go OG and CB in Round 1 and RB in 2 (depending on how the whole thing falls).

I might go S or LB in Round 2. With BJGE there's no need to go high on a RB. We have needs at S and Maualuga sucks, and Lawson and Howard I believe are signed to short contracts.

I could live with a safety in 2 but the class is so weak I'm not sure who would warrant the pick. There's a possibility that LaMarr Miller could drop all the way to round 2. If he's there I'm taking him. I dont think the Law Firm is an everdown back. We need somebody that can split carries.

refer to the first round of the 08 draft when two teams jumped them on a single pick..

i think the small organzational infatructre makes it difficult to disguise intentions. when you see the TE coach working drills with Gresham at the OU proday for an hour, everyone knows he's the pick

I wouldnt go that far. Teams work out people that they're interested in. It's not like the Bengals are the only team that does that. It's a pretty standard practice. Plus, everybody knows each others needs. So while Gresham made sense and was fairly predictable as the pick I wouldnt say it was in the bag. I remember I wanted them to take Dez Bryant when he dropped and thought they could. Last year it was fairly predictable that they'd take Green (just like it's predictable that the colts will take Luck, skins RGIII etc). As inept as the Bengals are I don't see them being so clueless as to blatantly say who they want in the back half of the draft.

to be more specific with what I meant, if you have 50 people working in your scouting department it's much easier to setup smoke screens, diversions, etc than it is if you only have a handful of coaches working that aspect of the team's operations.

Luck, RGIII are locked in at those slots. I consider that a different situation altogether

I'd agree with you there. It's pretty to deduce who the Bengals are interested in. That being said I know that the Bengals have drafted people in the first who they didnt even interview. SO while I dont think they're dumb enough to come right out and say who they want i'd agree that they are more transparent and clearly not as savvy as other organizations.

Don't the Bengals usually float rumors days before the draft that they're going after a certain player so they can throw the scent off from whomever they really want? I thought I recall this happening in the past.

I think most of the league does this. Philadelphia seems to do it more than others - They bring in a bunch of people the have no intentions of drafting. This time of year it's hard to believe much of anything.

That being said, the Bengals were very transparent of their love of Dalton last year and I think they're lucky he dropped. Peter King was reporting Jay Gruden's man-crush at least a month in advance.

Sometimes the chimp picks a ping pong ball with someones name on it that they haven't "interviewed."
