We've never done a good job signing free agents from other teams. And that strategy has rarely been beneficial for other teams. What would impress me is if we used that money to re-sign Collins and/or Johnson and extended AJ.

Then again, I'm looking forward to Hobs article about why Whit is a left tackle and that's why Collins is gone. Or how Hunt is ready to make the leap.

This.

All of it.

100% agreed.

Though, with Johnson, you still have Dunlap and Gilberry, plus Geathers (I know, I know), so at least at DE the position is still strong.

The OL is clearly better with Whit at guard, it would extend his career, and put the best 5 guys on the field (well, 4 since Center still sucks).

I don't think they are really sold on Collins.

Zach Streif is a fa from the Saints and actually does a few things for the local community as he is from Milford. he may be an option.

I disagree. I think they are sold, but they are already paying Whit LT money. Brown won't pay two LT's, and that, to me, is the issue.

Now, they may approach Whit about restructuring his deal, and adding an extension to move to guard, but who knows...

I don't think Collins is going to get a huge unmatchable contract from anyone.

I think for him it will come down to if he will get a chance to start here vs. knowing he will start somewhere else.

But look how many snaps Johnson played last year. He's clearly been one of our best defenders for the last two seasons and his presence turns a very good defensive line into a special defensive line. I think it's a mistake to let Johnson walk just because we already have good players on the line -- It's been the strength of the team and they have a chance to keep it that way. BTW -- I don't think there are many teams out there with great D-lines that aren't among the best teams in football.

All that said.... Someone might pony up and pay Johnson mega bucks and we'll have to let him walk -- I just hope he doesn't leave for a deal we could have easily afforded.

I agree, but I think the drop off between losing MJ on the DL is less than the dropoff from the impact of having Collins at LT and Whit at guard on the OL.

There is no doubt that I think individually, you can make an argument for keeping MJ over Collins, but the ripple effect, to me, is where the next man down is. Losing Johnson the DL would stink, but we have guys that can pick up the slack. I think the OL really needs him, and really needs Whit to move to guard, but maybe that's just me.

There is money to sign, both, however.

Collins was happy to sit on the bench or be second string all that time.

he's not dumb in a business sense, but I don't think he is the competitor that people make him out to be.

They low tendered all of them, so no compensation if/when they sign with someone else.

They get the right of first refusal.

the only one I would really have thought about tendering at a higher compensation would have been Rey. He showed last year he could step in and make plays.

So, what should he have done to show he wanted to be a starter? Bitch and moan? Say he's better than Whit? Force the issue?

He did exactly what he could do. Wait for his time to come, and show it on the field.

If he was mouthing off before, or afterhand, everyone would be jumping his shit.

We all know someone will try and sign Rey, he'll leave and we'll be stuck with shitty Rey M

wasn't he offered a starting job before and turned it down?
you can be vocal without being a douche.

I'm convinced that we really haven't seen much from Collins and I'm afraid there was a reason he was a backup all those years.
Not to mention he was smoking pot with Jerome Simpson, not that there's anything wrong with that, but if I was going to be a serious athlete I would probably not ingest smoke of that sort into my lungs.

*technically he released a "wrong place, wrong time" disclaimer, yea, I don't buy it.
let the goof walk if someone wants to pay him.

More than 30% of the league is probably smoking.

More than 30% of the league is probably smoking.

5.5% of Americans smoke marijuana. so around 1/6 of the people who have ever tried it stick with it. anyhow...

your claim is unjustified, and I said there wasn't really anything wrong with smoking it, but I would probably stay away from it if I were a serious athlete, just as I would stay away from cigarettes.

there also appears to be drug testing in the NFL
Insider's Perspective on NFL Drug Tests | Bleacher Report

so 'probably' not.

we all know how the Bengals roll.

if we can keep collins on the cheap, he stays, if not, he goes.

Dolphins are possibly interested in him. Bengals will play the "wait and see" game and probably pick one of the middle tier guys for depth along the way. that could be Collins I guess. just wait and see.

They most certainly will not sign him to a wonderful deal.

They're not going to pay Collins top LT money when they are already paying Whit good LT money. That's just common sense.

If they can restructure Whit to play guard, then you have some traction to pay Collins. But, not many teams are going to pay up for TWO left-tackles that start, even if one doesn't play LT.

Nothing wrong with the wait and see game. Bengals are not desperate. The OL is solid with or without Collins, it's just better with him because it upgrades LG massively while not losing nearly as much at LT as other teams would.

It is what it is.
