The Bengals could kick some major ass if they wanted to. they even have roll over cap space from last season.

instead they will spend to exactly 118.37 (89% of 133) and not a penny more.
that's 7 million they need to use to sign someone, even if it's just new draft picks.

at least we manage our space better than Cleveland and Jacksonville, there's a train wreck about to happen there somewhere.

Yes, but they have a ton of cap space and a no real team to contend.

The Bengals cap space is growing and already has a team in place.

They now have room to extend AJ, and work deals with Collins and/or Johnson if they want to.

BTW -- Doesn't the 'raising' of the cap simply move the market up?

I don't think it helps us or hurts us.

the Bengals goal of spending 89% of the cap basically gives them 7 million more to spend, they'll get that money from somewhere.

probably from the sale of Cayenne Peppa t-shirts.

I don't think so, at least not as much as one might think.

If you "TAG" Collins he's going to get the average of the top whatever it is.

If they can work a long-term, they are going to use those same numbers (top paid in his position) as starting points. If they feel he can be a top 7 LT, then chances are they will look at the contracts from #5-#10 and use that as a base-line.

Just beause the cap goes up doesn't mean that the market goes up.

But it does allow more teams to be players in FA. Teams that were up against the old cap might now have some freedom to make one nice signing.

Oh, and we're losing both Collins and Johnson.

Hobs already has the story written.

That is true.

A team that might have been in the running for Collins services at 8-9MM, might now be in it as high as 11-12MM and that does factor into it.

You always have that chance of a team overpaying, but that goes regardless, though I agree that with the cap raising, it does give another team that outside shot of over-paying.

Hobs already hard at work crushing our spirits

Bengals talking to their own as cap set

If the cap is supposedly going to jump to 140+ next year, and 150+ the following year, what is the rush to to all these extensions. They can pick up AJ's 5th year option and/or franchise him, Burfict will be a restricted free agent, and Dalton can let the door hit him in the ass on the way out.

It's time to get aggressive in free agency.

Oops. I forgot which team I was talking about...back to reality...

most of that is based on lies. also, the Bengals focus of the salary cap being 89% of the salary cap. they have roll over cap from last year, if they want to resign all the good players, draft picks, and a few new free agents, they can actually do that if they want to. the bottom line is, they aren't in the business of doing that, it cuts into their personal bottom line and as a business they are never going to do that, even if it means going further into the playoffs.

Mike Brown is an evil genius. I can't wait to piss on his grave.

With the salary cap finally set at $133 million the Bengals official available cap space is $31,199,082. Wow! With that type of cap space the Bengals could do some real damage if they were serious about winning a Super Bowl!

2014 NFL Offseason - Cincinnati Bengals' projected lineup, cap situation, free-agent and draft targets - ESPN

We've never done a good job signing free agents from other teams. And that strategy has rarely been beneficial for other teams. What would impress me is if we used that money to re-sign Collins and/or Johnson and extended AJ.

Then again, I'm looking forward to Hobs article about why Whit is a left tackle and that's why Collins is gone. Or how Hunt is ready to make the leap.
