Where do you think we are trimming the fat then?

Receiver? How many slot receivers can a team carry? We're also carrying an extra lineman due to Whit's injury. We're currently low on linebackers and DBs and that's tough for the special teams.

Posted this in another thread, I think...Joe Reedy is speculating based on Whitworth's knee, and the responses he's getting from people around the team, that it will be Whitworth who will be IR'd with designation to return and not Hawkins. Which means, they will carry 7 WR's until Hawkins is healthy, or they will simply IR Hawkins for the year.

Why can't we PUP Whitworth, he hasn't taken a snap in practice this year has he? I mean isn't that a rule for PUP? That way you can have him back after week 6, Hawkins back by week 9.

I don't know, J......Whit didn't even appear to have a good year last year, yet his PFF pass protection grade was tops of all tackles....in 2011 and 2010 he graded second, and his first full year starting at LT,2009, he was sixth....those are big shoes for Collins to fill......

It always seemed Whit was hit or miss. If a quick DE did a swim move to the inside, Whit could never recover. But outside of that, he wasn't bad.

I wonder if Collins can deal with Julius Pepper's swim move?

I remember a game in KC several years ago where he just got his ass handed to him. I forget who the defender was, but I think it was a quick guy. Remember?

Don't use facts with Jwil...he goes by what he SEES! I guess he's been spending all off-season watching game tape on Collins, along with Moch and Cousins, as well.

Not much game tape on Collins since 2008. He's always been assumed to be a solid backup, so I guess we'll find out. The guy he'll be dealing with is a multiple Pro Bowler.

Here are Collins' PFf stats from 2008-2012

2012--64 snaps at LT (0.8/-0.1/0.5)
2011--176 snaps {172 at rt 4 at lt} (6.1/5.2/-0.3)
2010--262 snaps {261 at RT} (3.9/6.5/-3.3)
2009--396 snaps {383 at RT} (8.3/2.2/4.5)
2008--380 snaps {380 at LT} (-2.7/-0.9/-1.9)

The numbers are ordered as such:(total rating/pass blocking/run blocking

So Collins has 1278 snaps over five seasons, about a season and a quarter's worth of snaps

His combined ratings over that time are a solid +16.4
His pass block ratings are +12.9, also quite good
His run block ratings are -0.5

He may be able to get it done. One caveat is that the majority of successful snaps have been on the other side where you tend to face less quality speed rushers.

Collins is what he is...a good backup. Could he start for some other NFL teams? Probably. Most likely at RT, and not LT, but a starter is a starter, I digress...

However, to say that Whit hasn't been that good is simply a false statement. He is consistantly rated as one of the top 5-10 LT's in the game. It's sheer lunacy to simply suggest otherwise. You may not like him, and he may not be flashy, but he gets the job done, and people around the NFL notice.

And if Jwil comes on here and says that he sees Collins doing better than Whit, then I'm going to suggest that Jwil get his eyes checked...lol
