It's impossible to say how it would have worked with Durant and a slew of role players, but in today's NBA, that team can win 'something'.

But it's clear Durant needs to be there for that team to win anything.

I actually don't mind Simmons, because it's just kind of entertainment value right now.

I think a team with Simmons and Durant might be able to make the finals, but not win.
Simmons fits, that's why I don't want to see it lol

Yeah no doubt we have no how those pieces would fit but I just it's more than they have with what Harden is offering them.

I think a team of Durant, Kyrie and Simmons can 100% win a title. In fact, I think that team is better than Durant, Kyrie, Harden.

Sure. It's possible. Or maybe not. I know you view Harris as one of the worst contracts in basketball but it really isn't. He's overpaid for sure. But he's a productive player that any team would love to have, salary notwithstanding. The Sixers didn't give up 2 1sts to move Horford who was MUCH more problematic as a player than Harris is.
Very Wiggins like....good player but not worth their contract

Pretty much.

I think a lot of people confuse overinflated contracts with bad contracts.

Russell Westbrook is a bad contract. Davis Bertans is a bad contract.

Andrew Wiggins is an inflated contract. Tobias Harris is an inflated contract.

If Wiggins or Harris were to hit the open market they wouldn't get what they are getting paid right now. But they would be getting paid 20+ million almost certainly.

Westbrook wouldn't get half of what he is getting paid right now.

Makes sense. Thybulle is critical to provide a defensive presence on the wing.

The Sixers aren't going to trade him or Maxey. The other guys are available. I get why Marks is pushing for them.

Now we see who blinks, if anyone does.

Which is why I don't get this trade from a Sixers point of view. As I pointed out before, this trade would improve the Sixers, but it would improve the Nets more and the Nets are one of the teams you have to beat just to get out of the East, let alone win a title.

Very fair and solid point.

Sixers better off waiting till the summer. They don't need to target Harden

Well ultimately I think teams have to bet on themselves.

A healthy Embiid with a healthy Harden is a pretty tough combo to handle. In fact, it is pretty close to unguardable.

The Sixers only realistic path to a title this year is getting Harden.

To be clear, I share your concerns that this is not what the Sixers should be doing. OTOH, I'm honestly curious to see what Harden could do with a guy like Embiid at the post.

Agree.

It feels like Morey is just trying to get a "name" for Simmons so he can try to claim he "won the trade".

It's similar to the Lakers with Westbrook, imo. It's to the point where, unless someone panics and does something stupid, they may be better off waiting until the off-season to move him because he will be an expiring contract which should get them a better return.

In both cases, waiting until the off-season at least affords everyone the chance to make a more well thought out trade.

I don't think it is similar to the Westbrook situation.

The Nets need to decide whether they can accept the possibility of losing Harden for nothing in the offseason. The Sixers need to decide whether they can live with another season of not being a title contender this season.

The Lakers would LOVE to dump Westbrook. But doing so would be extremely punitive for them an almost guarantee that they won't be serious title contenders this year. They have no choice but to hold off till the off season.

It improves the Sixers more this year though? The Sixers are adding Harden and losing a guy that isn't playing at all. The other players involved are more or less a wash (or at least a more minor impact). This trade could push the Sixers into the conference finals and beyond. Who knows what Simmons brings to the table this year once he gets onto the court.

Sure, next year Harden could leave for Portland, but Kyrie could leave Brooklyn too. The balance of this year could impact those decisions.

I'm not so sure the return is that much better next year for the Lakers. Who is looking for a $47M expiring contract to start the season, punting the season right from the start? Plus, that would mean another season starting with a completely new roster trying to gel.

I have zero doubt that adding Harden would improve the Sixers. I think Harden's ability to score from anywhere on the floor and his passing would work very well with Embiid. It would be a good trade for them to make if they could do it without improving a direct competitor more than they improve themselves.

The Harden/Kyrie/KD Nets have 2 weaknesses that are big enough to keep them from winning a title. Terrible defense. They try to make up for it with scoring. Exchanging Harden for Simmons significantly improves the Nets defense and if someone like Seth Curry is included, it adds more shooting to the Nets roster.

Honestly, considering the defense that both teams play, I don't think this trade even moves the Sixers past the Bucks or Heat.

I disagree. If Simmons has done anything at all to stay in shape, he should be able to effect them enough to still be better than the Sixers. Simmons hasn't missed time because of any physical injury, so I would expect that he'd be good enough to fit in pretty quickly.
