I am surprised it took until a week before the game to sell out. Speaks to the fact that, while these games against the B12 teams are against a higher quality opponent than our old BE variety - they still do not feel like "rivals" to many fans. It will come in time I suppose.
DBar, it's more the fact that people don't go when we lose. Attendance is no different now that it was in the 80's, 90's and 2000's. People show up when we win and stay home when we lose. I pointed out some games that had pathetic attendance... One of which was a Pitt game that only drew around 33,000...
I think it is some of all three, a lot of teams are struggling to fill their stadiums, no one wants to come watch a loser, and there is a lack of interest in a lot of the teams we play, PLUS there are not many visiting fans from our conference foes coming to the games in Morgantown. It is a lot easier for UMD, sPitt, VPI, etc fans to get here than for people from any B12 team.
It isn't like that everywhere. I am down in the Charlotte, NC area about 90 mins. from Columbia, SC = home of the Gamecocks. I work with many folks from across the border who attended USC. Prior to Spurrier arriving, the Cocks were horrible. They had a stretch of about a decade where 4 wins was a good season. I recall 2 seasons of 1-10 - I think they were consecutive.
But every home game, no matter the opponent - the game sold out. Now those are fans.
