Yeah...Bates wasn't THAT good......Good for him, but no way would I have wanted the Bengals to pay that.

So, in reality.... If Bates was offered 13 million per year in 2021 for a 3 year extension, he could have made about 42.5 million before the 2025 offseason when he would be 28 years old. Now, after a low pay year, a franchise year, and two years of his new deal, he'll make about 47.3 million and still be under contract for two more years before he is 30.

I can't say he won that gamble.... I also can't guarantee that the Bengals were offering 13 million per year, but they did pay Hubbard 10 per year and he wasn't nearly as accomplished at that point.

highest paid safety only gets 19 million a year on average, I'd say he did good. Now, they might be sad that he doesn't lift them over the hump in Atlanta, but that's not our problem.

Supposedly Hilton and Taylor-Britt are recruiting Gardner-Johnson to come to the Bengals. Expected salary compensation for Gardner-Johnson is $13 mill per year per "experts".

I really don't see the Bengals paying 13 million for Gardner-Johnson. I think they're looking at guys in the 6-9 million range. Maybe higher if the player doesn't need as much guaranteed.

13 is in the range of what the Bengals were offering Bates - so it wouldn't shock me...He's young enough (25) that paying him a little more could make sense on a 3-4 year deal that ultimately will be a cheap deal as soon as next year as the safety market will continue to get re-set thanks to Bates this year.
