5.9 million for him is tremendous - look at the Jonathan Quick deal, he got 5.9 or so per year - if you can get a really good goalie for 6 million or lower, that's really good

Sorry, $5.9 seems a bit high. Or a lot high.

Varlamov clearly not learning his lesson. First he was arrested for assault, and now he's committed highway robbery!

I think Varly is an incredible goalie, but with his injury history and that term, seems like a risky move.

I honestly don't think injuries are a major problem for him - it's seemed like he's stayed pretty healthy since coming to Colorado

the goalie market is saturated, i think that's a pretty bad deal. there are like 10 teams with 2 NHL caliber starting goalies and only a handful that don't have 1 legit guy.

From the trade thread, a list of all the UFA goalies this year.

Halak AND Elliott are UFA? Damn. Bad situation for a Cup favorite.

Looking at Cap Geek, the crop is bigger:
Brodeur (Obviously will retire)
Thomas
Khabibulin (Who I imagine will retire)
Emery
Bryz
Dubnyk
Vokoun
Gustavsson
Giguere (probably will retire)
Greiss

Didn't scroll down far enough. Scrivens, Labarbera, Hutton, Montoya and Peters.

Plus Miller. They overpaid for Varly. Badly.

Out of all those goalies you listed, Ryan Miller is the only one better than Varly - there's a reason certain goalies don't get paid a lot because they're not that great - a great or even really good goalie is going to get paid like he should

:agree:

I mean he's playing well now but if he regresses even a little bit there is going to be a lot of hair pulling over this deal.

Varly signing this deal with the Avs was like taking candy from a baby. I find it lewd, lascivious, salacious, outrageous.

I would disagree, Halak and Elliott at least are every bit as good as Varly, but considering a number of quality starters are available as UFA means that they didn't have to pay so much for him. With the speed the Avs have and in the system they play Elliott, Vokoun, Halak, Gus, Scrivens, and Greiss could all be very successful there.

Plus Anaheim has four NHL starter caliber goalies and a need to trade for some more speed.
