I would disagree, Halak and Elliott at least are every bit as good as Varly, but considering a number of quality starters are available as UFA means that they didn't have to pay so much for him. With the speed the Avs have and in the system they play Elliott, Vokoun, Halak, Gus, Scrivens, and Greiss could all be very successful there.

Plus Anaheim has four NHL starter caliber goalies and a need to trade for some more speed.

Eh, I don't think Halak and Elliott are better than Varly - part of why those two are good is due to St. Louis' system - if they were really good, one of them would take the reigns - Varly's taken the reigns and he's had games where he's single handedly helped the Avs win - Halak and Elliott aren't terrible, but if they were really good, one of them would have taken the reigns by now and would be the bonafide number one starter for the Blues

looking at the list of combined numbers from 2008-2009 to this season for all goalies who have played at least 100 games ... His GAA is 24th and his SAVE% is 22nd

his cap hit next year will be 7th highest

Honestly, I only look at his time from once he got to the Avs - he never started regularly with the Caps - once he got to the Avs he started playing pretty well

This year his GAA is 17th. Behind Scrivens, Elliott and Halak. Two ahead of Peters...

the bigger the sample size the better imo ... and it, to some respect lessens the "system goalie" factor ... especially if a goalie has moved on and is playing with another team

with the same time frame/criteria that i provided the Varlamov numbers above ...

Halak ... 12th in SAVE% ... 7th in GAA

there are 30 #1 goalie jobs in the league ... there are alot of goalies who arent #1's that could fill that role ... if Im an NHL GM ... supply and demand says you should be able to squeeze goalies bigtime

the big hammer Varlamov has is the KHL

I'd take Halak over Varly in a heartbeat. This is a guy who single-handedly brought the Habs to the ECF.

I'd obviously also take Miller over Varlamov.

This season is really the only good season that Varly has had as a starter.

I'd bet the Blues get Halak locked up which will make Elliott available. I'm definitely not sold on him as a workhorse starter. He's more of a 1B, IMO.

He was one of the main reasons they beat us the year in the playoffs, he played well for the Caps.

:agree:

Elliott has all the tools except maybe consistency. Time will tell.

And no one has taken a stranglehold on the #1 job in St Lou because both goalies are soooo good. Like Schneids and Lou in Vancity. As good as one can be, they just can't outshine the other. Good problem to have, I guess.

agree w/ everyone's talk of the goalie market.

varly, IMO, worth 4 mil tops.. i also don't think any goalie should be paid over like 6. there's so many goalies in the league that can at least provide passable goaltending in the regular season, with the potential to get hot in the playoffs. there's probably 40 goalies i'd be ok with as my starting goaltender.
