That 2nd year left of his rookie contract was his 5th year option, which they had already picked up this offseason and would've been $12.268M. With this extension, he'll earn less ($10.5M per) after that. I would imagine this would smooth out that $12.268 as well, but we'll have to wait for the details on that.

Of course, it would help to see an uptick in his play, but the Rams vanilla preseason schemes will never show that. Hopefully their regular season schemes aren't as vanilla.

A similar extension may be coming for Ogletree, who also had his 5th year option picked up this offseason.

With all the young, new talent such as Easley, Cam Thomas (he's a little older but a huge road grader/run-stopper), Fox, Seau, and Longacre, Brockers and Hayes may be looking over their shoulder in the future unless they keep their play at a high level. Same goes for Britt and Quick. Quick may not survive this year's camp although Fisher may pull a Pead with Quick.

I just find it odd they decide to play hardball with guys like Janoris Jenkins and Joyner, but then give a guy like Tavon over 10mil a year...Maybe its just me, but Jenkins and Joyner had earned a big payday. Tavon? not so sure...

I'm scratching my head on this as usual...another stupid signing in my opinion. Tavon is a gadget player who is never used correctly in this system, how stupid does this GM and this dipshit of a coach have to be to throw 50 mil at a 175 lbs can't play every down guy. Yep just resign midgets forgot that the oline is shitty or the fact that the new kid getting his lunch handed to him week in and week out. With dumb moves like this I only see the lambs lasting 5 yrs tops in LA.

Pretty close to reality Jermaine. One has to wonder what is the criteria Snisher are using to sign guys but fight others and letting them walk. Jenkins wasn't worth what he got from the Giants because he still got beat badly on occasion as the Giants are discovering. Yet they dug their heels in with Tru and he is still playing at a high level even in the preseason. Sometimes the rationale is a bit impulsive and sideways.

I saw this and was so disgusted I decided not to post the thread.

30M guaranteed for a gadget player that isn't that good.

Saw he was the 12-13th highest paid WR now.

The guys above him are legit #1 WR's

:agree:

This extension was flat out stupid and baffling. But then I remember who's in charge and then I'm less surprised. Tayvon is basically a newer version of Ted Ginn Jr, except with more arrogance and lesser maturity. I'd rather have used that money on trying to extend someone else, possibly keeping Janoris or signing another WR that was out there.

This money wouldn't have helped with Janoris, as it isn't affecting Tavon's 2016 salary. The Rams had already picked up Tavon's 5th year option, making his 2017 salary $12M+. This extension affects 2018 and beyond (and may bring down that 2017 cap number for Tavon).

Fisher is saying this contract for Austin is "anticipation for what he's going to do" :noidea:

So like Robinson then. We drafted him based on his potential instead of drafting a guy that was already ready to go like Matthews. Sounds like the typical 7-9 bullshit to me.

Yep, I agree UVA. Especially with O-lineman we have by-passed better talent and ready-to-go players more often than not over the last four years. Don't know what the hell Snisher has for criteria for selecting O-linemen the way they do. SOme of their selections in this category boggles the imagination.

I like Tavon, but we just gave a $42 million dollar extension to a receiver that has yet to have even 500 receiving yards in a SEASON. He has 1,133 yards for his three-year career. I just don't get it how they determine who they are going to pay.

I wonder if it has something to do with the Rams been under pressure to sign the players before reaching free agency because once that happens you know they're going to leave. So they wave big money in front of the player and hope he signs now. But still makes no sense

Sounds like a hands up movement all over again! Only this time I'm assuming Austin held them up at gun point?
