Fielder will finish with the same career home run total as his father, Cecil, who was a major leaguer for 13 seasons with five teams.

The six-time All-Star is scheduled to receive $24 million annually through 2020 as part of the nine-year, $214 million deal he signed with the Tigers in 2012.

It just doesn't seem right that he continues to get paid while he's not playing. In the NBA....the team can get a medical waiver on the salary I believe.

Can MLB do the same?

It's kind of a shame too because when he was with the Brewers and even the Tigers, he was always healthy it seemed. One of the things I admired about him..

It continues a long trend of sluggers in that age extremely poorly in their 30s.

I agree, the team should be able to get out of that. I can understand having to pay him what he is owed for the rest of the season, but the team should be able to get out of future years. That's devastating to a payroll to have to pay someone $25 million that isn't even on the roster.

He is walking away because of injuries that were sustained while playing. He SHOULD be paid.

That sucks for the Rangers, no doubt, but that is what happens with contracts, and why players want LONG contracts.

thats what u have insurance for:suds:
According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, Prince Fielder (neck) is considered medically disabled and doctors will not clear him to play.
Fielder recently required his second neck surgery in the past 27 months. He isn't walking away from the game by choice, according to Rosenthal, so he's technically not retiring. This means that he'll receive the remainder of his contract in full. He's owed $20 million per season through 2020. The contract is partially ensured, so Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports that the Rangers will pay him $9 million per year during that time

To bad about Fielder. He's 32, that's to young to retire.

Fielders contract still counts toward the lux tax, though. Not sure if the Rangers would ever be a contender to go over, but that is a consideration. Even if they are only on the hook for 9M per, their sal numbers still say 24M per.

Pretty sad. Fielder was a helluva of a hitter for a while. Always amusing watching him run the bases.

Don't forget Ortiz too. A lot of the old guard of AL hitting titans gone this year.

It really is a young man's league now (Trout, Harper, Rizzo, Altuve, etc....)
