Okert is doing very well in the AZL

8 innings, 4 hits, 1 ER, 1 BB, 10 K, 0.63 ERA

Blackburn is not starting, but used in relief.

7 innings, 7 hits, 3 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 3.86 ERA

Our hitters are not doing so well.

Carbonell (23 years old)

.205/.244/.282, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 2 BB, 11 K, 39 AB

Blake Miller (was not on my radar) (24 years old)

.188/.278/.219, 0 HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 8 K, 32 AB

Kelby Tomlinson (was not on my radar) (24 years old)

.143/.189/.171, 0 HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 7 K, 35 AB, 6 SB, 1 CS

One player on the Scorpions that I liked is Roman Quinn, from the Phils. Switch hitter, centerfield, VERY fast, good plate discipline (9 walks, 9 K's), 21 years old.

Keep your eye on both Miller AND Tomlinson. They are both very similar to Panik and Duffy (Tomlinson has speed, as well). Not good to see them struggle here, but they are the next "no-buzz" prospects coming up.

Wasn't Duffy ticketed for the AFL? And someone else on the roster. I'd say they got their fair share of experience. Maybe Strickland could have used it. How did we win this thing the way that guy was pitching? He's got his work cut out for him.

He played himself out of an automatic roster spot out of spring training.

Not sure his stuff is good enough, or his head is solid enough for the job.

Tough place for a job interview, though.

It's going to be interesting to see what SS does with the five FAs. My guess:

1. Panda -- pahy da mahn heees munie
2. Romo -- 2/16
3. Peaved -- close call, but no more than 2/20
4. Tron -- another close call, maybe 1/7
5. Beast -- AL 1B/DH

Unless Pablo is outrageous (meaning "I want all I can get, and this other team is gonna pay me $3M more per year so that's where I'm going") he will be back.

If Panda is signed (at $17-20M/yr), only a starting pitcher will be signed, as that is the greatest need. Romo will be gone (unless he signed for $5M) and Morse won't be back (unless he signs for what he got this year).

I am not sure Morse will demand much more than the 6 he got from us this past year. His bat is not really good enough to warrent being a team's primary DH and his D pretty much limits him to 1B or emergency LF.

I think the roster spot he would require is the real cost any team would have to spend to sign him. The Giants should only pursue him if EVERY other possible solution falls through. Even then, I think I would prefer to fill from within or dumpster dive.

Agreed on Panda and Beast. I think the Giants play "money ball" with bullpen arms and that's why I think they'll see value in a 2/12 contract for Romo. I think there's a pretty good chance Tron is back for 1/7 and unless Timmah is traded to the Ms, our rotation will look like this: Bum/Cain/Huddy/Tron/Timmah. The good news is there are a number of arms due to come up in 2015 to replace any injured/broken vet SP.

Should be interesting.

P.S. I'd love to trade Timmah for a couple of B prospect OF and eat half his 15 salary.

FWIW, MLBTR predicts the following for Peavy, Morse, and Panda:

Peavy: 2/28 Free Agent Profile: Jake Peavy ? MLB Trade Rumors

Morse: 2/22 Free Agent Profile: Michael Morse ? MLB Trade Rumors

Panda: 5/100 (this is from April, and no analysis yet like they did with Peavy and Morse) Latest On Pablo Sandoval ? MLB Trade Rumors

IMHO, we would be crazy to pay anywhere near that for either Morse or Peavy. About Panda at 5/100, I'm less critical, but I still think that would be a mistake. But I don't have the data on the more subjective impact to the "Giants brand" that the "Panda brand" brings. Now that Timmy has faded, only Panda has a brand image that rivals Posey. It may even exceed it.

What is the value of this kind of impact?

I forgot to mention one more pitcher the Giants have in the AZL, Tyler Rogers

Winter Leagues: Arizona Fall League: Statistics | MLB.com: Events

8 innings

6 hits

2 ER

1 BB

4 K

He was in Augusta and San Jose this year. Big guy at 6' 5", will be 24 in December. Don't think I had him on the radar, but he had a nice 2014 season. Appears to be a ground ball pitcher.

Blackburn came on in relief and got scorched a bit.

1.2 innings

3 hits

4 ER

0 walks

2 K's

1 HBP

1 WP

To be fair, the pitcher that relieved Blackburn was even worse, and allowed both inherited runners to score. So Blackburn's AFL ERA is now 5.40 (up from 3.00).

Carbonell started and went 1-4, raising his average to .209. He did have an outfield assist, throwing out a runner at 2nd.

Kelby Tomlinson went 0-4, lowering his average to .118

Nice find.

Barr was on KNBR the other day and specifically mentions Blach as a guy they are hoping may offer some support to the rotation next year. He wasn't gushing, but he did mention him in a throw away comment. Those, I think, are the most telling comments. Maybe they view him as the "next-up" guy?

Sabean mentioned him, and only him, on an interview yesterday as a guy who could be in the rotation in 2015. Of course, he also said Broken Timmy would be in the rotation

Was it Sabes? OK.

But yea. That means he is HIGH in their eyes. If they are rattling off a bunch of guys, I think it can be dismissed. But when a SINGLE guy is mentioned, it means that he is on their mind and can be taken as a sign that he is highly rated.

I heard that interview, too. Blach was the only one mentioned by name.

Looks like we have some stud relievers coming up, Okert looks terrific. But I don't see many starters in the mix in the near future.

last year we had at least 6 guys who were pegged to be MLB-ready by mid-end 2015. Unfortunately, that ALL stumbled in '14. I still have faith, but it doesn't look like we have a 1 in the system.

Just spit-balling expected ceilings for our kids...

Crick - 2/3
Mejia - 3
Blackburn - 3/4
Blach - 3
Beede - 2
Stratton - 3/4
Flores - 2/3
Agosta - 5??

Am I forgetting anyone?
