They already had two stars in Jose Abreu and Chris Sale along with decent role players like Alexei Ramirez, Adam Eaton and Jose Quintana.

Now add Samardzija, Robertson, LaRoche and Melky Cabrera to the roster and is it enough to shoot them into the playoffs? I think so.

A decent but not great team that could get frisky in the playoffs but not really a favorite to get there, imo

Contenders for the playoffs? Absolutely.

For a World Series? Going to need a lot to go right.

Playoffs, absolutely. AL Central is the weakest division still even with the Royals run at it.

Detroit and KC should still be strong, but the Sox did a lot of good things this off-season.

Favorites? Probably not. I think the Tigers still hold that title.

Contenders? ABSO-FUCKING-LUTELY!

I actually think the Central could be the strongest top to the Twins this year.

Cleveland has narrowly missed the last two years. If your Royals can somehow resign Shields or scab over his void, four teams that could make a play for the division and the WC now. And once you're in, all bets are off.

Eaton and Garcia staying healthy is important if Chicago is going to have a lineup to go with their rotation.

FUCK you!!!!

But I agree. Central may not have the top dominant team but the division is going to be deep as hell. Scary knowing that the upcoming powerhouse is chilling in the basement.

The thing about the White Sox is they can just easily win 78 games as they could 90. 4th place as easily as they can be 1st. The rotation lacks depth, the BP lacks depth. The offense, backend of the BP, and front of the rotation is solid, but the underbelly of that team is not all too flattering once you look a little closer.

I am far from alone in that opinion, as well.

cant this be said about almost every team in the league? the giants just won the world series with a team very similar to the one they had in 2013 that won 70+ games.

I hate the word "contenders" because honestly any team that makes the playoffs is a contender. In baseball at least. Any team can go on a run at any time. White Sox look like a Wild Card team to me.

If Nolasco can put it all together..... AND Joe Mauer gets hurt before prior to ST n roids it up like a muhfuggah again, it's a five team race.

If Carlos Carrasco puts it all together and Carlos Santana isn't the worst hitter in baseball thru May, were all screwed. Aside from Randy Quaide and the other four Indians fans out there.

No, it's December 15th.

A lot can happen between now and the start of the season, and for me the contender/pretender talk doesn't even start til the All Star break.

Til the games start they're just names on a roster like any other. Remember that time the Angels got Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton?! What a force they were!

Yes, I expect them to contend for a playoff spot this year.

Pujols has been OK, but he still has 8 years of ELITE pay to come. They did not sign him to that contract to get "OK".

That is baseball though.

Guys get "underpaid" through their glory years of mashing baseballs and mowing down hitters. Then get paid through their decline.

You cant look at contracts anymore in this no cap sport.

Every team would be floored with the numbers he put up as a 34 year old.

We might need more time with Abreu, too. We dont know if he is going to be:

1) one of the 3 best hitters in baseball
2) the best power hitter in baseball
3) something inbetween
4) a guy who will get figured out a little bit or banged up and just be above average

White Sox contenders?

<sigh>

If they continue to play sub par to average baseball like they have been, then no. They have a couple exciting players, but they don't play in a cohesive manner like perennially successful teams in the League do. At the same time, after rooting for the White Sox my whole life, I've turned into a cynical prick.
