Bowden of ESPN:

6. Seattle Mariners | Pick: Nick Gordon | SS | Olympia HS (Orlando)

The Mariners need middle-of-the-order bats, but there just aren't any sitting here. However, they can take care of their long-term solution at shortstop by drafting either Gordon or Trea Turner with this pick.

I have Gordon over Turner, and Gordon should inject some energy into Seattle's middle infield during the second half of Robinson Cano's contract. Gordon is a premium athlete with great bloodlines as the son of former big leaguer Tom Gordon and brother of Dodgers infielder Dee Gordon. He's the best middle infielder in the

I wouldn't be opposed to them picking Gordon. It wouldn't be a reach like Conforto and you can think of a .289/.339/.378 line with good defense, like his brother is putting up this year.

Best available pick is always the way to go. Get the best possible talent through the draft, and then if you don't need it, trade it for what you do need.

Drafting out of a sense of exigency is what incompetent clubs do.

I am seeing a lot of the "experts" link the M's to Alex Jackson. I admit I don't have a lot of knowledge about the draft but I figure being in high school he's 4-5 years away at best from contributing to a big league team.
Its always hard to figure out which way this team this team is leaning. Ill be curious to see how it plays out.

I read the same thing and have the same views. If he is truly the best player for that spot, then I am all for it. I don't want the 'Faster to the majors guy'. We are the Mariners, what's our hurry? One guy won't change our positioning unless we spend money so 4 to 5 years is just fine.

I hope the M's take him or Gordon. I want high upside in this Organization. Most of their 1st round guys in the Jack Z era have been low ceiling/high floor type of guys.

I just want BPA and by BPA, I mean best player capable of being an ML player or star. I know it is a crap shoot, but we just need some success in this round. I think Zunino is a success, but Ackley and Hultzen, not so much.

A hitter would be nice, but we also have a pitcher friendly park that can help in trades to get proven bats. It does appear we have either had bad luck or bad development of pitchers, so not sure what to think there. That said, we need the next Pujols or Trout.

Jackson is it which is great except for the fact he is a Boras client. Gordon was my other choice but gone the pick before. Sign him early and get him started.

I got a feeling being a Boras client he may take longer to sign which could hurt him getting development this year. Still I am happy with this pick. It happened to be best player available and a need (corner outfielder) which is a bonus.

The concern initially is that he is a catcher, but we project him as a right fielder with a fast track to the majors. Tom McNamara says it should be easy to get him signed with the knowledge that he will in fact be fast tracked. I have a good feeling about this one, the kid can rake. We are due, and with the club at the point of weeding out the pretenders it's time to fill up with the real deal. Good pick!

well its official its going to be jackson honestly I love this pick we need an OF prospect because we have no depth in the OF the michael sounders experiment is over, ackley is a bust, franklin is always hurt, we can still hope for romero but other than some power here and there he isnt someone to be excited about james jones right now is the only person playing well and im not getting my hopes up....

but Jackson looks like a good pick has a good build he can be like a Nelson Cruz type player with a better glove

He said he is fine with the move to RF. They say he has a rifle arm, Could also get some time at 3B. Right pick for that spot so I have no problem with how he versus turns out...but hope he becomes the king of his class.

I like what I am hearing about Alex Jackson offensively. It sounds like he is athletic enough to play a decent RF and has a strong arm fitting that position. Not much for wheels though. Its his bat that gives him value and its his bat that will get him to the big leagues. I sure hope he is the real deal.

Really happy that we went all in on getting some young offensive power talent with high ceilings with our first 2 picks. Get them signed because we need that in the system immediately.
