Very true for run defense. He sure as fuck is not helping pass defense. At 15-16 million a year, you will never see a CB worth a shit unless built through the draft. Does Slay or ??? from this year payoff?

He definitely helps the pass D. I'd even say quite a lot. The problem that we've seen is when our D line (Suh included) even starts to get pressure our coverage had already failed. Or it failed before he could even get a chance to get hurries. Suh is doing his job against the pass. You'll see better numbers when our guys cover better.

Go back and read that post again. Notice the CB being vital to him helping the pass defense. Until you see CB's worth a dollar. Suh does nothing for it. I will start breaking down to smaller terms in future.

He completely changes the way offenses play against detroit. The lions rushing defense is much, much improved. His double and triple teams allow for players like levy and ansah to dominate. He is the MVP of detroits defense.

First off -- no one is triple teaming Suh. I think the only player in the NFL to face a triple is Calvin Johnson and that is quite scare too.

Second -- i agree he is the MVP of the defense, because he is the best player on a middle of the road defense. If he wants 16 million a year -- I do the same thing the Bucs just did with Revis -- Get multiple quality players to replace him. They signed a pro bowl CB in Verner and signed Michael Johnson at DE for less than they would have paid Revis.

Third -- I don't want to see Suh on another team, but if he wants an absurd contract, how can you possibly justify it for a DT?

Four -- Our run defense has improved, but let's not go crazy. Detroit ranked 6th in run defense, but only 3 teams in the NFL had fewer carries against them because everyone threw on Detroit's secondary. The 4.2 ypc, which ranks 14th in the NFL is a better indicator on how the run defense performed.

Interesting. In that case I think Detroit is actually one tenth of a percent or three tenths (one stop) away from having an great (top 10) secondary. (yards per pass and qb completion percentage)

agree -- which is why our secondary will lead us to the super bowl. we are only drafting for depth this year anyway.

Numbers don't lie Mike. Look where we ranked in those categories. Or are numbers only good for shitting on things?

They were 14th QB comp % and 20th in YPA. Couple that with 19th in attempts per game and 23rd in total yards allowed -- if that equals a top 10 passing defense -- I can't help you.

Not top 10, but those numbers sure seem to suggest that our pass defense wasn't nearly as bad as you're making it out to be...

It was still bad though. It wasn't the worst in the league, but we had/have our fair share of issues.

I may be in a minority here, but I have faith that our D-coordinator can really help improve our secondary. He's got lots of proven success on his resume. If he can't get these fuckers to improve, no one can.

The biggest issue, imo, was the total lack of takeaways by our CBs, as TrustMe has pointed out.

They were closer to middle of the pack (ish) in most of the other categories. I'm pretty hopeful that Austin turns some of these guys into players. I have high hopes for Jonte Green, in particular. He's been in Jim Shorts' imaginary doghouse for the last two seasons, but every time he's been on the field he's played well...

I agree. Many times our CBs were in position to make plays, be it deflections or picks, but lack the ball skills to make those plays. This season we should see whether Austin can improve those or if the players never had them to begin with. We should hopefully see some sort of improvement.

Which brings me to another thought. When the hell do players drop these ball skills? I mean it's taught at every fucking level to turn ur head and get ur hands up. Do they make the NFL, get those dollars, and all of the skills they've attained fly out the fucking window? It boggles my mind to know end. Same with wrapping up tacklers. They practice this shit every day. Ugh. Ok, I digress.......

I got slammed and called film expert instead reading what the masses say. College tape will show what guys go for the big hit instead wrapping up. Doesn't start in pros. Over half of Delmas' college tapes were big hits. Missile style...

Detroit had about the best schedule you could possibly face last year and they still gave up a ton of yards and a ton of big plays, while only contributing 2 interceptions by the CBs. They didn't face Peyton, they didn't face Brees, they didn't face Brady. The top 3 QBs the Lions faced were Aaron Rodgers once, Rothlesberger and Romo -- they combined for 8 tds and 0 interceptions.

That is why I have continued to say -- if Detroit's goal to build an unstoppable offense is nice, but it isn't what will get them to the next level. It may get them to the playoffs. But once there -- they will get picked about by elite QBs, just like Brees did when we got there 2 years ago. You have to have playmakers on both side of the ball, not just on offense and not just on the defensive line.

Yes. Mike we get it. All of Detroits players suck. Our team sucks. Nothing worked. We should replace everyone and everything about team. Everyone and everything is better than us. Worst team in NFL history every year. Fuck dude we get it.

Well this would definitely be a way to get more than 3 starters in draft.

Can we keep Roary?

Can we get cheerleaders now please?

I agree with you about the contract. Just was pointing out that he impacts the team in more ways than sacks and tackles. I said the run defense is improved, never said it was incredible. That defense needs a ton of help.

I agree. Thats why the lions need to stick to building through the draft and resigning the studs they draft, i.e. suh. They wont ever find a suh or an elite cb in FA until they become a contender. The reason Suh hasnt extended his contract yet probably has to do more with wanting to play on a winner than it does money. Hes not so sure detroit is a winner and rightfully so. Just my opinion.

You are right, the numbers dont lie. But lets not kid ourselves. The lions had a cakewalk of a schedule last year and I dont believe they played one elite offense. (maybe the eagles). We all saw what happened there. So yes, the numbers did look better, but that secondary is not very good.
