our sack totals say we are one of the worst. the amout of unblocked pass rushers mean we're one of the worst. having the pocket collapse from the inside out makes us one of the worst.

our line is bottom percentile in the league. which is the definition of one of the worst

That can't be right. I'd say they are an average line. They pass protect well at times as long as it is a convenional rush and they run block fairly well at times. They really struggle pushing anyone back down by the goal line however. That is what puts them down where they are.

this isn't the senior bowl, conventional rushes aren't the norm. speed rushers can completely kill our protection as well. miller has been a big help in picking guys up, but it limits what we can do because the line needs help even for those conventional rushes.

I might even place them on a level a little bit above that; this is not even close to the same O'Line that started the season in front of Alex. What the problem is on the goal line I have no idea - that is just straight Big on Big, but we just can't seem to get the push...

i thnk goodwin and snyder just can't get push, that's where the major problem is. with a stronger RG that right side should be instant 1st downs.

To me, a big weakness is they can't seem to get 3-4 blitzing schemes blocked well. They should be more coordinated than they are. Some of the better 3-4 schemes really got to them this year like the Ravens and Cardinals.

Fire blitz's are difficult for anyone to defend, really. The Saints blitzed on two of three drop-backs and often with more than five. I thought we met that challenge pretty damn well.

Blitz/Protection is the game within the game. If the DC calls the right blitz against the wrong protection - bad things are going to happen. Conversely, if a DC calls the wrong blitz against the right protection (and Alex Smith finds Vernon exploiting the hole) then big plays happen.

Today, the Ravens do not get half of the 9 sacks they did on TGiving.

Today and perhaps an actual 7 day rest/preparation.

Our OL has been fantastic IMO.... the only weakness/hinderance is that overload blitz... but that could/should be counter by Smith by adjusting either line protection or WR breaking off his route.

Heck even Anthony Davis(baller right now) pointed out the blitz.

I keep forgetting the time/travel factor in regard to the Ravens game.

I agree, our O'Line, while still having room for improvement, is deserving of much more credit than they receive and our protection schemes have also vastly improved.

As for Anthony Davis, I'm lovin AD more and more with each passing game - that kid is becoming a fucking gamer! Davis was hugely and unjustly chided earlier in the season by that second rate stat site PFF; and, while I like what Neil is trying to accomplish over there, some of his 'helpers' wouldn't know the difference between a coverage sack and my ball sack.

I would expect after reviewing the film between us and NO that Fewell won't bring as much 'heat' as Williams did; which means, if I am correct, that our receivers are going to have to win their battles and get open. I'm sure we all remember what Gores rushing totals were against the Giants.

yep, we don't hear Davis' name much now, and we all know anonimity is good for linemen.

I hope they have Gore and Hunter be more involved with the passing game(split out Hunter and keep Gore in for protection?). This would lessen the pressure on the WRs to get open. Smith is going to have to get rid of the football ASAP.

I'm also hoping Delanie Walker is able to play!

Exactly! Speaking of anonymity, no holding calls for both Staley & Davis...I would love to know the last time a pair of OT's went 17+ games without a holding call...maybe it is nothing at all, but it sure seems pretty damn phenomenal.

I agree we may need to incorporate a short passing strategy as our run strategy just to loosen up some gap assignments for Gore.

As for Walker, I just heard John Clayton mention on Colin Cowherd that Walker has yet to receive medical clearance and Ginn is (right now) questionable for Sunday - not good news.

Would be nice to use Hunter like the saints used Sproles.

That'd be nice; there are only a few players in the league who are even capable of doing the kind of things Sproles does though. Jahvid Best comes to mind, but he's always injured.

I know what you mean, but to get him out in the flats or spread him out as a WR sometimes would be nice. He is still pretty quick.
