Thats all Awesome.

But let me play devils advocate here. Many have said Kirk isnt worth $30M. Lets say for a moment this is true.

Lets also say, once Free Agency really starts, we start to see what teams WILL actually pay for him. Now stick with me, here comes the twist.

What happens IF.. Kirk signs a deal right around or slightly higher than Grap, but in the ball park of what we gave Smith.

Would one not then start to wonder, did the Redskins again over react. Or on the flip, was the Smith trade really just the Skins way of saying we dont care what other teams are willing to pay, we simply wanted some one else??

I would read that as neither of the choices that you presented, instead, fall back to your premise as support of my original stance. The prove it year 2015, did two things, 1. Locked the team into a what is he actually worth mode, despite market forces...AND... 2. Informed Kirk and his agent that in order to maximize his earning capacity, the market was his standard. Failing to negotiate because of these opposing starting points, each ended up where they are currently. I honestly believe that Dan and Bruce wanted to keep him, but at their prices. Conversely, I honestly believed that Kirk wanted to stay, but at his prices. Shit still reads as Silly, as I type it, but that's what happened.

Now if Kirk signs a deal remotely close to what we gave Smith, then he obviously overplayed his hand when here, or as some point out, didn't want to be here. The other side of that failed time frame, was our FO not getting value for him in one of the last two seasons. If he signs for what's being reported then, Dan/Bruce underplayed their hand for his services or thought that he wasn't worth the price he was seeking.

Looks like the Smith contract details are about to come out.

Rapoport tweeting that:
Contract note, as guaranteed money continues to be an important topic: #Redskins QB Alex Smith’s 4-year, $94M deal that’ll be official Wednesday includes $55M guaranteed at signing & $71M fully guaranteed by the start of 2019. Nearly as much as Matt Stafford, more than Jimmy G.

If that's true...WOW! Can't wait to see the rest of the contract details.

Wow indeed. Would kinda kick to the curb that whole Allen's done a great job with contracts thing. And you know what would make it sting even more is who were we in a bidding war with? Everything I read said only Skins were looking at AS besides more than a bridge QB.

Fuck man. Pay a dude you never seemed to really want 40+ million over 2 years and then sign a guy who seems to have a lot in common with the guy you never wanted and pay him 71 million guaranteed for less than 3 seasons of play.

I would have to agree with shark. If Cousin's signs a deal close to Smith then the Redskin FO once again miscalculated, hit the panic button and made a trade for a lesser QB instead. Or as shark has suggested maybe they just didn't want one of the top QBs of the past 3 years.

It is all an IF right now until we know what he and Smith sign for.

Whats this have to do with anything? should i pull up a video of Wentz getting his damn ACL jacked up or maybe what it'll look like when he gets his leg broke, because with his playing style thats the outcome you can look forward to. Foles should probably be the Eagles starter

My take, the only way he only costs $17M is if they back loaded the Extension. Because usually any signing Bonus (that $55M) is spread against the first five of the contract.

So to keep him at $17M they would have needed to roll either base salary, or his other two bonuses into the $55M.

$55M/5 is $11M a year pro rated.

Add in his base salary of $14M and you are already at $25M against the cap in year one.

So they either backloaded it, or he is going to cost more than $17M against the cap this year,.

I am not making this up - I just found this on the same site that displays this contracts & is generally pretty accurate. Perhaps it is backloaded. Please show me another link that shows otherwise (an actual link - not the opinions of anyone on this board). Thanks.

You may be right coach. You don't know that, it is your opinion which is fine. However there was nothing "wrong" in what I said. The front office starting with Scot botched this in 2015. The Skins decided to trade for Smith (and possibly over paid, we will see when the contract numbers come out) because Cousins said he would not sign until he tested the waters. He never said "I am leaving no matter what." Can't blame him though if he did. He took the risk of getting hurt two years in a row. You don't like him, I do. Stats bear out that I am more right about him than you.

We will see how Gruden and Smith work together. Unless something changes drastically Smith will not have the weapons he had last year while we know what Cousins did with one NFL caliber WR and no running game.

Wow - you are really reaching. Smith only had 5 INTs last season (& has not had double digit INTs since 2010) so whatever flaws he has are not in that area. Beyond that the Packers game was in 2015 & the Cards game was from 2014! You must have wasted a lot of time digging up this trash.

Very weak effort on your part.

& if that happens I am guessing there is a very good chance the Foles full time starter does not equate to Foles in Vikings & Pats games. We have seen this story before and quite often the playoff/SB star does not equate to long term NFL success.

This post ^^^^^^ is way more "No shit, Sherlock." than "Hellified insight, Coach."

You are 100% correct on both counts. The Redskins will have a QB in 2 years. That QB will be Alex Smith or somebody else.

And as you keep trotting that same ol' line out in seemingly every post you make. When did it hit you that KC wasn't re-upping with the Skins no matter what?

I know where you got it from. The same sight has zero information on the actual Extension. And the reason for that is, the Extension does not go on the books until after the trade is official and the Extension is signed.

So right now the only information they have is the salary and Bonuses Smith was supposed to get on the last year of his curent contract. $17M which is $14.5 in Salary, $2M in Roster Bonus and $500K in workout bonus.

m basing my thinking off of the reality that any signing bonus will be prorated across the life of the contract.

So again, if he gets a $20M signing bonus, unless they lowered his base salary and pushed money into later years, him coming in at $17M or less is contractually untenable. Especially if the reports that he will get $55M at signing, and the total of $71M fully guaranteed by the start of 2019 are correct.

We should know by Friday, latest Monday what the real numbers are. But I stick by the idea that to shoehorn that much money into two years is not going to be extremely cap friendly.

The only flaw in your statement is, "the Redskin FO once again miscalculated, hit the panic button and made a trade for a lesser QB instead".
Smith is not the lesser QB dad and Cousins may get all years guaranteed in his deal which will be considerably more than what Smith signed for you can count on that one nugget.

I hope you are right but just looking at their careers except for last year (okay 2 out of the last three years) Cousins has been the better QB. I see no flaw in my comment. Smith is the safer QB. Like I said this debate is best held in 3 years. I believe when that time passes Cousins will be the much better QB.
