Looks like the Smith contract details are about to come out.

Rapoport tweeting that:
Contract note, as guaranteed money continues to be an important topic: #Redskins QB Alex Smith’s 4-year, $94M deal that’ll be official Wednesday includes $55M guaranteed at signing & $71M fully guaranteed by the start of 2019. Nearly as much as Matt Stafford, more than Jimmy G.

If that's true...WOW! Can't wait to see the rest of the contract details.

Does that average out to 24M guaranteed per year for the 4 years? There has to be an out clause in year 4.

We'll have to see the details. Those guarantees could be in the form of guaranteed salary, signing bonus, roster bonus and depending on which one of those it is, it'll change the cap figure. We could have the details as soon as tomorrow.

Nope - as per link - more like $17M this season. Not sure how that works with supposed 4 yr deal but everything else here matches what others are reporting. Maybe our resident cap experts can explain.

BTW - I am only trying to clarify things here - not taking sides. Can we please try to come together on all of this & move forward (or do some folks just want to bitch until the end of time). Go Skins.

My take, the only way he only costs $17M is if they back loaded the Extension. Because usually any signing Bonus (that $55M) is spread against the first five of the contract.

So to keep him at $17M they would have needed to roll either base salary, or his other two bonuses into the $55M.

$55M/5 is $11M a year pro rated.

Add in his base salary of $14M and you are already at $25M against the cap in year one.

So they either backloaded it, or he is going to cost more than $17M against the cap this year,.

There are a lot of ways it can be structured.

55 million guaranteed at signing could mean 20 mil signing bonus, 12 mil year one guaranteed, and 23 mil guaranteed in year 2.

Guaranteed at signing is different than paid at signing. Everything depends on language.

Sure there are ways to do it. But again, I think its going to mean a tad bit of backloading likely went on. We will know in approximately 3 days.

Should be interesting. BUt in any case, I doubt Smith gave them any cheap easy outs on this one.

I expect it to be backloaded as well and we will be getting out in three years.

So if they back loaded it that means they want him to start all 4 years of the deal. Maybe a restructure in the future. Im eager to see this deal on overthecap.com. I don't understand how they can pay the same as Stafford, Grap and KC.

Usually the only reason you backload a deal is because its the only way to get the guy AND stay under the cap. Logically in the case of the Redskins, backloading Smiths deal would probably be more about still being able to be players in FA this year to try and make some sort of push.

As I said, its going to be real interesting when the numbers come out.

It will still be better than KC fully guaranteed deal.

It is interesting to note that, the general consensus on Kirk is somewhere in the 30 million dollar range, it's also possible that Kirk has overplayed his hand with respect to that amount. It looks like Denver and Minnesota are having second thoughts regarding return on cost with him. In Denver, as it will be in Minnesota, anything less than a SB will be considered a loss against outlay.

John Elway hints Broncos might not be as interested in Kirk Cousins as we all thought.

Right now, it seems that there are only two teams in serious pursuit of Kirk, and Denver is NOT one of them.

Are only two teams seriously chasing Kirk Cousins?

If reports are true that Minnesota has reached out to Drew Brees and they can somehow manage to persuade him to sign with them, that leaves, the New York Jets. Now they can pay him without much ripple effect, but ironically, removing all other competition for his services, puts them in better position to sign the guy for a lot less than he's reportedly demanding.

Thats all Awesome.

But let me play devils advocate here. Many have said Kirk isnt worth $30M. Lets say for a moment this is true.

Lets also say, once Free Agency really starts, we start to see what teams WILL actually pay for him. Now stick with me, here comes the twist.

What happens IF.. Kirk signs a deal right around or slightly higher than Grap, but in the ball park of what we gave Smith.

Would one not then start to wonder, did the Redskins again over react. Or on the flip, was the Smith trade really just the Skins way of saying we dont care what other teams are willing to pay, we simply wanted some one else??
