If we pick up the option year on Aldon Smith can we trade him next year? What's the cap penalty if we trade him?

We could pick up the option year, and then closely monitor his personal life and if he continues to show patterns of being a knucklehead in his personal life maybe we could dupe some team into coughing up a first rounder and cut our losses?

from a football standpoint, his value is as high as its gonna get.

from the off field issues standpoint, you have to take a chance now. if it plays out ok, he'll cost a LOT more.
