My parents, grandparents and aunts were born and raised in The City. They all hate/hated the abbreviation. It may be a silly thing, but if the locals don't like it, I avoid it. For the record, please don't ever refer to SLO as San "Looey."

It's definitely a slower lifestyle (by choice), and we like the similar-feeling acronym. It's perfectly alright to refer to San Luis Obispo as SLO, and it isn't that big of a deal to call it San Looey (again, pretty laid back place). It's just one of those things that if you hadn't lived here or known someone that has, you wouldn't know how much some people hate it. I just laugh when I hear, "We're in St. Looey Obis... SLO! We're in SLO."
