This is just an example of sometimes you win the trade, sometimes you lose the trade...

Wheeler and Alderson

4

Franchez and Beltran

Do you make that trade?

2010 version of Franchez and 2011 version of Beltran vs. modern Wheeler and Alderson?

EDIT: Today? If it's just, "do I do it as far as the eventual pay-off?" Of course, one option equals two sure championships (in a roundabout way), the other... ? Certainly, there were other moves that were made to help those teams along. As far as a players-in-a-vacuum swap, I revert back to my first question.

No. Combine the two trades into a single deal, each part if the deal taking place at the time they actually occurred.

Basically, we would be giving up 1 stud prospect (2 years away) and a minor league journeyman for use of a near All-Star 2B for about 1.5 seasons (and 18M+) and 2 months of an elite hitting OF. The 2B ends up playing an integral part in the orgs first World Series Championship in 56 years.

I make that trade again, and am happy I made it.

I'll be honest. I didn't mind the Alderson trade (I didn't think a guy as big as Alderson running the ball up to the plate at 88 MPH was really top tier starter status) but I was pretty pissed about the Wheeler trade. I thought because Posey was out and much of our lineup was underachieving from the year before it (Huff, Burrell, Torres, etc.), that we should have taken the time to look at who in our upper farm was worthy of potential big league time the following season. I especially despised the trade after we let Beltran walk. I thought that all signs pointed to Wheeler being very impressive while climbing up the minors. The question was Alderson and Wheeler when the reality was that they were traded one year apart in completely different situations, therefore should not be considered a package deal when analyzing the trades.

Well at least (based on the noise) the Giants aren't going to do the same this time around. I think they felt pressure to do "whatever it took" to try to compete in 2011. Now that they have 2 in 3 years, it's more "well, we've had a good run recently, we aren't going to add wheels to a broken wagon, if it doesn't work there's always 2014").

While I agree with this strategy for this year, that is a dangerous, slippery-slope for an org to get started down.

However, I do trust the org if they choose that route this year. Outside of Durham to the Crew, I do not remember the last "sale" trade this org has made (and calling Durham a sale is a stretch).

Admittedly, I have never lived in San Francisco. But I don't see what the objection is to call it "Frisco". It's not like it's slang for something offensive. It's an identifiable and respectful contraction, like a friendly nickname.

What am I missing here?

That's what you're missing. It's not Frisco. Frisco is a town in Texas. It's San Francisco, SF, or The City.

Or as Herb Caen used to say, "Baghdad by the Bay"

My youth was spend in Minnesota, and whenever I heard people say "Frisco", I cringed. My aunt and uncle lived in Anaheim, and they always talked about "Frisco". Just struck me then as fingernails on a chalkboard.

I never lived in San Francisco itself. I lived in the East Bay (Berkeley, Walnut Creek), Davis and San Jose before my 28 year exile to SoCal (Azkaban). My parents-in-law lived in The City, and my wife was born and raised there.

I grew up in the South Bay (Los Altos/Mt View/Sunnyvale) and I never had a prob with the whole "Frisco" thing. I don't think I even knew it was bad until relatively recently (10 or 15 years).

Hmmm. With all due respect, that's pretty much a non-answer.

I'm gonna let it go at that.

Both my parents were born in CA grew up in the city (in fact, my father followed DiMaggio as he set the all-time hit streak record with the Seals in the 30s, at 61). "Frisco" was never a big deal in our household.
