I agree they can, but do they at Bama? Thats what I am curious about. Would any other scholarship student get the same treatment or is this special or more harsh?
Not sure. It would be interesting to find out.

You also weren't getting about 1,000 a month stipend from the university to pay for incidentals.Just putting myself in that position when I was 21. By cash I mean any sort of payment method. I was always broke lol. Point is moot tho since I found out the kid was found in a campus parking lot. He had been driving for sure
Are you serious? I can't tell if you are joking or you are just a fool. I will give you a hint -- one is being provided a 6 figure scholarship to represent the school on and off the field. The other is not.
A DUI can affect many peoples lives in different ways. If you drive for a living you probably lose your job if you're a Doctor or a Nurse you might be in trouble with licencing board. If you're a teacher you could face problems .If you are on some sort of scholarship you could be in jeopardy of losing it. You might lose your insurance coverage because they want to either cancel you or raise your rates so high you can't afford it. Many jobs you get suspended if you get one and lots of jobs if you get one while training (firefighter, cop, EMT) you most likely get dropped. So no it's not just football players and many face consequences beyond what the law gives you (unless you play for Saban)
If I would get a DUI I would lose my current position. Sad but true. Happened to another rep. They said insurance wasn't going to insure after a DUI of said person.
Let's be clear:
According to the Tuscaloosa News the car was cranked and the lights were on. If you are passed out drunk in a car that is running it is a huge issue.
This isn't I got too drunk and decided to sleep it off. The car was on campus and he either was headed out or just got back in. Either way he earned that DUI.
Academic scholarships can have "character stipulations" in them. Depends on the university and/or organization giving the scholarship. However, if my academic scholarship was up for renewal and the university knew I got a dui, I'd be a little worried
Fact: Football players get special priviledges for being good. It starts with the day they get a scholarship for that ability.
Crank car for AC - lights automatically come on.
And I find it hard to believe that he pulled up in a car drunk, and then didn't make it any further. More likely - and what Saban has said, is that he got in his car and stayed there instead of driving.
Also, it was not on campus from what I read.

I see nothing wrong with that.

AL.com requested the police report from the university police department, which referred the inquiry to the school's media relations office. It responded late Monday afternoon with a report stating the time of arrest was 4:30 a.m. Saturday at the 1100 block of University Blvd -- just off the Strip near campus and a few blocks from Bryant-Denny Stadium.Crank car for AC - lights automatically come on.

Seems to me, it's the one's providing the 6 figure scholarship to represent the school that should be worried bout it then, not butthurt fans from other schools.
And as for Hand - from what I've heard, he does an excellent job in general of representing the school well. That's not an issue.
If your dumb enough to let the car running while your hammered, you deserve all the shit coming to you. Don't give a fuck how hot it is.
You find it hard to believe? I once saw a friend of mines truck on the side of the freeway. Truck running , lights on and him passed out in the drivers seat. Happens all the time. If his car was in the bars parking lot and he's passed out in the car then yeah he did the right thing. But he's drunk and passed out car on and in a parking lot not near the place he was drinking then how do you think he got there. lol
Side of the road isn't the same thing as parked in a parking lot.
Besides, it's already been said that he didn't drive anywhere.
No, the guy getting an 8 figure salary is the one responsible for the student athletes HE brought to the school. Alabama didn't offer Hand a scholarship - Saban did. Without football, he wouldn't be there.
And I love the fans who have NO CLUE saying things like -- he has done an excellent job representing the school AFTER he was just arrested at 4:30 in the morning for a DUI, while passed out in the driver's seat of a running car. Make that man a team captain.
Two drunk guys in a car thats running. yeah waaaaay off. lol. I'm surprised Saban doesn't give him a medal.

If he was just off the strip then he probably hadn't driven yet because that is where the bars are. Wouldn't be unusual to have to walk that far.
He still earned that DUI and should be suspended for a half.
