Remember the good ole days when the pen used to be our strength?

Yes. But it hasn’t really been that way since Mariano retired. In fact, I remember when Mariano was setting up Wetteland and the game was basically over after 6 innings. That was as good as it gets.

Aroldis Chapman was mostly really good, but he blew a lot of high profile saves along the way. But this version of the Yankees bullpen is probably as bad as it has been in a long time(not sure if the numbers back me up on that). Holmes seems like a 50/50 shot to complete a save when he comes in.

I definitely might be remembering it wrong. I’m not sure what the stats look like, either. I remember some really good bullpens with the likes of Betances and David Robertson and Andrew Miller along the way, for sure. And Chapman was mostly really good…but he tended to turn into a pumpkin in the postseason. I think this version might be the worst bullpen they’ve fielded that I can recall.

I definitely don’t remember any “game over after 6 innings” versions since the Rivera/Wetteland days, though. That was ridiculous.

I don't think it would make much sense for Campbell to spend much time in AAA. He's dominated AA and there's just not that much of an adjustment for hitters going from AA to AAA. I think he'll be in the majors pretty soon. Maybe not this year, but I could see earlier 2025.

Good call on Devers. I think Xander and Mookie had a cup of coffee in AAA, but were slightly older than Anthony is now.

P.S. I hate the “Big 3” branding, as well. To me, that will always be Bird, Parrish and McHale…with Garnett, Allen & Pierce also acceptable(to a lesser extent). I won’t apply that to 3 kids in the minors by any means!

it's not uncommon for top prospects to go from AA to MLB pretty quickly, especially if they dominate

the thing that makes me feel good about Campbell is the BB/K ratios

The Yankees had some ridiculous bullpen configurations in the 2016-2018 timeframe with Chapman, Miller, Betances & Chad Green(forgot about him) in 2016 and then Chapman, Betances, Green & Robertson in 2017 & 2018. By 2019, they added Britton(forgot about him, too) and he was great for a little while. But by 2021, it was looking a little thin out there. Holmes, Peralta, Leutge, Kahnle isn’t the same.

So, I’ll amend my statement. The Yankees had the kind of bullpen that could end the game after 6 innings in 2016-2018(maybe even 2019) for sure. But probably not since. And I stand by my statement that this is the weakest bullpen they’ve fielded that I can remember.

The Yankees had some ridiculous bullpen configurations in the 2016-2018 timeframe with Chapman, Miller, Betances & Chad Green(forgot about him) in 2016 and then Chapman, Betances, Green & Robertson in 2017 & 2018. By 2019, they added Britton(forgot about him, too) and he was great for a little while. But by 2021, it was looking a little thin out there. Holmes, Peralta, Leutge, Kahnle isn’t the same.

Told you but I do agree that since 2020 ish, the pen isn't close to those years. A lot of that is due to Loaisiga inability to stay healthy the last 2 seasons.
