The scariest one is the total defense rankings, because five of the top 30 are still on the future schedule.

Nebraska next four opponents
Illinois #24 total defense
Wisconsin#18 total defense
Minnesota #29 total defense
Northwestern #11 total defense

Nebraska's only stout defense that they have played has been Miami. That was a really bad game for 52 minutes.

So after 4 weeks the defense is a certainty and the offense is a fluke?

So after 4 weeks the defense is a certainty and the offense is a fluke?

My two conclusions

A team with a good passing offense and a good defense is going to stuff Nebraska. Miami

A team with a good pass offense and a bad defense is going to lose to Nebraska. Southern Miss, South Alabama

An unknown that will be solved
What does a team with a good rush offense(Northwestern) and a good defense do against Nebraska? Nebraska's strength is the rush defense. But then, has Nebraska truly faced a better than average rush offense? Miami still had a running back put up over 100 yards on them.

The next game is Illinois.

Illinois has a mid level passing game, is that good enough to beat Nebraska? Right now we know that any team that can pass is going to light up Nebraska.

Illinois has a good defense. Will it stop Nebraska's better than average offense?

Illinois bad rush offense should be stopped by Nebraska.

We had 460 yds of offense vs miami. But you only want the story of the 1st three qtrs told. Unlike yesterday, where the 4th quarter was the only one that matters. The fact that we shut down the 14th ranked passing attack for 3 qtrs is not as important as the 3 qtrs vs Miami.

4 games is a small sample size but it does point to some trends. Is our run D that good or is it just that teams completely abandon running in favor of playing 7 on 7 drills with us?

Ask yourself this, do you think if Nebraska's offense is stopped, can the Nebraska defense stop the opposing team?

Not if they're on the field all the time.

6 of the last 20 opponent drives have resulted in scores. Not great, but respectable. 2 of those drives started inside the Nebraska 25. 1 drive was extended after an interception but a horrendous pi flag was thrown.

So 4 drives realistically. Not bad and shows a decent red zone defense. I.E. The more field they have the more success they have when moving the ball.

Reminiscent of BoPleeny's bend but don't break.

Illinois last beat Nebraska in 1924. If I can do math in my head.

The question with the defense is it talent health or scheme?

Anyone with experience on D played in a TOTALY different scheme before this season. Poor depth in the front 7 creates more time for receivers to get open against dbacks learning a new system. Exclusively zone to now exclusively man.

I'm confused, I thought Bo's scheme was a combo of zone and man, he just kept the safeties back for help over the top, right? thus our CBs could come up and press without having to worry about getting beat deep. I'm not that great at remembering.

at the beginning of the season a lot of guys were talking about how they were looking forward to pressing and playing man2man, but now that's its time to put money where their mouths were, it hasn't shown. I've never been great about watching the DBs, but it just seems to me there are two things they really need to work on, first is turning a receiver outside instead of in, I think it was Kalu that got beat for 2 TDs against So Miss because he let his receiver go inside and didn't get between the QB and the WR to at least make it a someone difficult pass. second is just reading the WR, sometimes they are in position and could make a play, but fail to either look for the ball or just simply get their hands up when the receiver goes for the catch.

I believe the terminology was "match read zone". Whatever it was, it was fairly rare and specialized. Seems like its taking a while to unlearn some its principles.

When I watch Nate Gerry in press conferences he seems to be unhappy. I am getting a negative vibe from him because I think he thought one thing with this defense, but it seems he is now being forced to come up and play linebacker instead of sitting back there to intercept balls. It probably is because the linebackers are injured and not very good. Or maybe I just wear a big tinfoil hat.
