Look, don't misunderstand what I am saying here. Emmitt Smith was one of the greatest RB's in NFL history. Emmitt was blessed with one of the top 5-6 OL in history, and was blessed with not having a major injury.
I would bet that if you asked any NFL GM or HC if they could have any RB present/past in their prime and as they picked, that player was taken off the list...Emmitt would not even be a top 10 pick.
I doubt that very seriously. That is like saying Smith is not a top 10 player ever at RB. Talent wise is he top 10? No not even top 100 to make it in the NFL, but talent does not make the player. This is not Madden where you look for the fastest strongest player. In real life heart decides how far you go. I could probably name 10 backs at least that are in the NFL that are more talented than Smith ever was, but better than he was? No way, heart plays a major role into all of that.
Let me show everyone who says anyone could have done what Smith did wrong, let me also show how important this guy was to Dallas during our SB years. In 1993 Smith held out the first two games we went 0-2 in those games, Smith also didn't play against the Falcons that year if memory serves me correct, we also lost that game. Well Smith played in 13 games that season and we went 12-1 in those games, the 3 games he did not play we went 0-3. Not to mention we won the SB that year with him. Get past all the records for a moment and understand that Smith's true greatness was defined by the fact that this team depended on him to win games, and as good as a team as we had then, the 93' team proved that without Smith there would be no SB that year or probably any other year. Smith is a top 3 RB of all time because he is a winner and his team depended on him so much to be a winner. Take away the fact his talent level was not the highest physically in the NFL, take away there was nothing truly special about him, and the fact remains he was probably the most important cause of us winning 3 rings in 4 years. Would you dare take away from Jerry Rice simply because his physical talent was not tops? Nothing special about Rice except work ethic and heart, same as Smith.
