Three more years of Castellanos works out perfectly. Detroit's top 3B prospect, one Mr. Zach Shepherd, is a 19 year old Australian who is listed as the Tigers #22 prospect. MLB Prospects predicts that he should hit the majors in 2018. (It might take that long to break in that tough kangaroo skin fielder's glove). His numbers were not impressive at A ball.....but I have not checked the 'Vice' Minor League Newsletter, which may list him as a future star.

Actually the Tigers top 3rd basemen in the minors is Marte... but I guess you forgot about him. Shepherd is trash... he will never make the majors.

Age matters because most of the time a player gets considerably better around his age 26/27 season. There is a reason why a hitters prime is considered to be late 20's to early 30's... and NOT his early 20's.

bums may make mistakes, but he is dead on with this. I recall this very clearly on the CBS site. In fact, I tended to go along with this view of Moose as well. Hosmer's fault, in my eyes, was only his lack of power for a 1B. But Vice....you cannot deny that you declared failure for both of those players before they reached 26.

Has (or will) Avila be changing the scouting corp? If not....I don't think it will really matter if the Tigers pick 8th or 12th in next summers draft. Tigers may just sign the first kid named 'Avila' anyhow. Or the best "23" year old they can find....seems that age is somehow critical! LMAO

While I agree Detroit hasn't had an influx of minor league talent -- they haven't had 1st round pick for multiple years in a row. Detroit lost their 1st round pick signing FA's three years in a row. Detroit also used their "prospects" to make deal after deal after deal. Dombrowski used the minor leagues as trading chips to get young established MLB talent.

As far as age -- unless you are a no doubt, can't miss prospect -- it takes time for these kids to get used to MLB level pitching. The fielding is another issue. You can't teach range and some players have great gloves and others don't.

Hitting wise -- it takes time. Hell -- the perfect example is Bryce Harper. The golden child and ultimate can't miss prospect. Through 3 years -- he was hitting. 270 with a little bit of power. His career highs were 22 hrs and 59 rbis through 3 years. Year 4 -- he is hitting .330 with 40+ HRs now.

In short Dave Dombrowski ignored and obliterated the Tiger's farm system and then took off. Too his credit - but mostly due to Mr. Illitch's pocketbook - he created a contending ball club for a half dozen years. Sadly they missed the big prize. Dave saw that he had bled the system dry in Detroit and took off to do the same in Boston, IMO. Unfortunately for Tiger fans there will be at least a couple of down years while the farm system re-builds and the major league team tries to work around some pretty awful contracts.
