I can't count how many times the TV talking heads would comment about how Alex never saw an open WR down the field.

ya it's easy when u talk out of your ass. smith did miss wr's but the tv analysts weren't bringing it up. every qb misses seeing every single wide open wr.

how old are you, 15? the objective is to master the hill not beat jerry rice up the hill. with the confidence he gains from completing the workout, he can face the adversity of fatigue, the pressure of making a play for his team in the 4th quarter, etc.. thats what jerry hopes he gains from the experience.

Oh. When did Jerry tell you that?

Jerry Rice preps 49ers rookie A.J. Jenkins for run on 'The Hill' - NFL.com

"I think he's going to learn toughness and how to be able to endure, which is very important because in the fourth quarter when you're tired, you're going to have to make plays to help your team win that football game and you have to be able to stay focused," Rice said, according to Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. "So if you can master the hill, in the fourth quarter, you're still going to be able to go out there and excel."

I went to every game last year and my seats are upper deck end zone so one of the few things I can see consistently is wide open receivers, and believe me Alex misses some wide open guys. Crabtree gets open more than people realize.

He also has a problem of missing the throw down the sideline, which everyone can see. He did get better as the season progressed however.

I vividly recall two deep balls to Davis that were flat-out drops. There was a fade to Ginn that probably should have been caught, but it's tough to call a drop, per se. I'm hard-pressed to think of too many others. There was the one called back for a chop, and the one where Crabtree was allegedly out of bounds (still irritated the camera crew didn't get a better shot of that), but I can't recall too many outright drops in the endzone.

That's my sense, though I only saw the Championship game live this year. There's no doubt we needed more talent at WR, and hopefully we have addressed that. But Smith either fails to see or fails to hit open receivers far too often for my liking. And he is very hesitant to throw unless the receiver has quite a lot of open space.

I think Smith can still develop, and perhaps as he gets more comfortable in the offense he will see the field better. But that's among the things I'm looking at when I refer to "feel," and I think Smith struggles in those areas (including pocket presence, adjusting protection, making plays on the move, etc.). All of these things improved last year, but they are still far from elite IMO. I need to see growth in those areas to make me comfortable with sticking with Smith past this season.

to add to what you are saying, it seems that he is only willing to pull the trigger when the receiver has made eye contact or had his head turned back to the QB. I would assume his trust issues is a result of being in schemes where he had to throw to a space and the WR not being there resulting in turn overs.

Not much to make anything of. Harbaugh said many receivers came in out of shape. I guess that's what training camp is for, to get to NFL ready status.
