I was thinking about roster management for the Giants this September. In another thread, I mentioned that the Giants are tied with 2 other teams to have the 2nd lowest roster size (with 3 teams below them at 31). However, Ryder Jones still counts toward the active roster, since he wasn't played on the disabled list. Then I thought about how Avelino hasn't played since the 8th. Made me wonder, how many guys have actually be used in the past week. I dug around and found that they've played 29 players since Sept. 10th. Of those 29, 14 are position players and 15 pitchers. However, Tomlinson and d'Arnaud haven't played since the 10th and Belt may be done for the year. On the pitching side, Strickland hasn't thrown since the 10th and Johnson and Blach since the 11th. Essentially, Bochy is managing like he has 25 guys.

Slater (7), Belt (4), Longoria (7), Hundley (6), Crawford (7), Pence (5), Tomlinson, Panik (7), d'Arnaud, Hernandez (7), Garcia (4), Blanco (6), Hanson (4), Shaw (5).

Rodriguez (2), Dyson (2), Watson (4), Strickland, Suarez (2), Johnson, Blach, Black (2), Okert (2), Holland, Moronta (2), Melancon (3), Smith (2), Stratton, Bumgarner.

Smith didn't know what to do with the ball after he caught it. Some nice defense from the Giants today - Slater, Panik, Crawford, Longoria, Smith.

As much fun as today's game was, there are massive implications for the race for the highest possible pick. The Giants are on the brink of elimination from the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th picks. A Giant win tomorrow assures the Padres the basement and eliminates the Giants from catching the Royals, Marlins and Padres. A White Sox loss would eliminate the Giants from catching them as well.

1) Baltimore 43-107 - (12 games left) (1-2)
2) Kansas City 52-98 9 (12) (1-8)
3) Miami 59-91 16 (12) (2-12)
4) White Sox 59-90 16.5 (13) (2-12)
5) San Diego 60-91 16.5 (11) (2-12)
6) Detroit 61-89 18 (12) (2-13)
7) Cincinnati 64-87 20.5 (11) (2-14)
8) Texas 64-86 21 (12) (2-16)
9) Toronto 68-82 25 (12) (3-17)
10) Minnesota 69-81 26 (12) (3-17)
11) Mets 70-80 27 (12) (3-18)
12) Giants 71-80 27.5 (11) (3-18)
13) Anaheim 74-76 31 (12) (7-25)

Giants baseball 2018. Even when they win, they lose.

It looks like realistically, the best they can do is #9.
