Well, um, that's EXACTLY what they did do, right? After Uggla, they did not practice "continual dumpster diving". They essentially handed the job off the Panik and Duffy, and eventually Panik.

Could they have called Panik up earlier? Maybe. But I think that would have been akin to taking a cake out if the oven 20 minutes early because if it tastes good after 2 hours, why didn't we take it out after 1 hour and 40 minutes (I do not bake, so I have no idea how long it takes, but you get the drift).

I think they handled the 2B issue (after the off-season) about as well as they could have. Remember, they did not trade Panik for some util guy to fill in, and now I looks like we MAY have our 2B for the next 6 years.

This...
If Panik is truly the real deal (still not quite a guarantee), Sabean and the boys have another outstanding success in their column. They played it just right.

I am glad they brought up Panik. I just wish they would have done it sooner.

HicKs looked very good in ST and in April, but while he played really good defense, he had a HUGE hole in his swing. Pitchers adjusted after April, and he regressed to below his career averages in average.

I guess my issue with Panik's progress was that they seemed to look everywhere BUT Panik. I like your analogy of taking a cake out of the oven too soon, but Panik has hit at A, AA, AAA, and he was a solid hitter in college. He's been in the oven for two plus years in the minors and several years in college. The man had a track record. You don't draft guys like that only to dumpster dive whenever there is a need. If the Giants didn't know what they had, or whether he could cut it in the Show, they need better scouts and talent evaluators.

It worked out, so I am good with it. Would love to see Panik hitting 2nd. And I'd also like to see some of Duffy at short to spell Craw. Craw has 49 RBIs which is huge, but his average and even his defense are suffering. Is he just tired? Is there an injury?

Stokes, this REALLY sounds like a "gotcha" argument.

If they call up Panik and he bombs, they called him up too soon, or, worse yet, they never should have drafted him. If they call him up and he does well, they screwed up by waiting so long.
