The Yankees offered more per year to Cano than the Mariners did. They just refused to do the years.
Yep.

riiiiight.....and they've been so lights out under his replacement......lolBecause they got tired of consistently underachieving while under his watch?
The Yankees don't get outspent for anything they want, regardless of what Cashman says to the media. I never said anything about them letting him go because he was underachieving. They didn't want to commit $250MM because they didn't think he was worth it and they knew more about him than any other team. Add to that, dollars mean far less to the Yankees than they do to the Mariners.
Ellsbury has nothing to do with my point.

They offered him something like $180M(for 8 years?) and that was as high as they were willing to go. They didn't want to do 10 years for a guy that would be over 30 for the bulk of the deal. But they took that same offer and gave it to Ellsbury instead(to have him be over 30 for the bulk of his deal). Cano could have accepted the Yankees offer, you know. But Seattle came in with 10 years. End of story. Don't reward the Yankees apparent "shrewdness" after the fact.

Dennis Leonard. July 11, 1984. With Carmelo Martinez at bat, Leonard was assessed a balk while nobody was on base.
