Myers will never reach his potential. When two sharp, financially-challenged teams trade away a top prospect/ROY guy, buyer beware.

I was saying this all Spring. Myers is a stiff. I was taken to task for saying it, but the red flag went up when TB was willing to move him. They NEVER do that on guys who are young/cost-controlled.

But you agree that many a preseason publication listed them as a playoff team, yes?

After adding all those pieces and all that payroll, they were expected to contend this year.

I agree that a lot of people thought they were going to be good, but I didn't think those moves meant shit. Reminded me of when everyone was all excited about the Blue Jays when they got all those broken/shitty players from the Marlins.

Like the Jays three or four years ago the Padres were the sexy pick this year. Being the sexy pick doesn't mean they were good.

I don't know how missing the playoffs for a decade can be considered "overachieving", but you are right: this is the first time they were EXPECTED to be good and he stunk up the joint.
How did he over-achieve despite not making the playoffs? Simple. Until this year, every one of the Padres rosters the last few years, on paper, looked like a 60-win team. Their position players have sucked. Hard to win many games when your best hitter is Seth Smith (2014), Will Venable (2013), Ryan Ludwick (2011).

I remember the first time I met a Padre fan. It was on my honeymoon in Cabo. I remember feeling like I'd just found a unicorn.

Yeah, he had some shitty teams, for sure. But here was his chance to manage an actual "good" team and he blew it. Anyone can suck when expectations are low/nil. But you can't get away with sucking when expectations are high.
